Balls!

Found the reason I can't turn the crankshaft...pistons are rusted in. Going to try some penetrating oil.

If the HG hasn't been leaking for a long time, and the engine has recently run, the steel parts (rings, bore) should have survived, and a good soaking with penetrating oil should free things up. Cylinder walls are pretty hardy things.

Very glad to hear that! I'll keep soaking it...

It's been a week as I've been sick.

Acetone/ ATF mix did the trick. Hurrah.

Taking the cylinder head to the machine shop tomorrow. Can I ask...can I leave the valves in? And injectors? I don't want to disturb them if I don't have to. I have taken the cam off so the valves sit low.

If the head is only going to be checked for flatness, and possibly skimmed, you should be able to leave the valves (and their springs/retainers) in position.

Thanks Chris. Didn't want to drive there for nothing. I just couldn't remember!

My valve spring compressor is missing the adapter. I might have another look for it while the head's at the shop. Also going to check the cost of them cleaning up the valves. If it's cheap enough I'll get them to do it.

Head is cracked. They said it can't be welded.

Got to decide whether to get a second hand engine or give up on the car. Sigh.
