Broken exhaust camshaft ?

Post by picassodad »

Picasso, 2003 with a 1.8 dohc petrol EW7J4 engine, has anyone ever come across one of these with a broken exhaust camshaft, by the camshaft sensor end, or just broken ??

Has the timing belt broken? I wouldn't really say EW engines are known for breaking camshafts, even after a timing belt failure.

Not familiar with that engine but I've seen the usual broken camshafts (Into three pieces) on the earlier diesels and the end broken off where the vacuum pump fits on some later ones.

It was just a thought, engine really misbehaves when approaching normal working temp.

A good starter then after a money or 3 it goes beserk, really wild ign timing swings, unresponsive, backfires but revs ok when coaxed.

This is ongoing, found detached vibration damper on exhaust camshaft, wieght rubber bonding was broken...

No mil light when engine running and the Speedo just shows bars...

Will be getting the car back once pug has mot

Any codes in injection ECU?

I might be wrong but if the camshaft would be at fault it would run poorly all of the time.

Sounds more like an electrical fault
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

Yeh I tend to agree, ECU going loopy...but the clutch bell housing seems very dusty inside.

We recon it's had a clutch.....

Initial DTC said crank/cam mismatch....

It's a very long story....and it's been expensive....there is a thread about it back in 2020...picassodad...
