C4P EGS problem

Post by jml »

Sorry if this has been asked before (many times ?) but I’ve not found an answer in my searches.

A friend has a 59 plate Grand C4 Picasso 1.6HDi with EGS gearbox. It has covered 113,000 miles.

Driven ‘manually’ with the paddles there is no problem with the gear change however in Auto mode it will not change up from Fourth gear.

Any suggestions as to where to start looking ? I know it will probably need a session with Diagbox (which I have) but she lives a long way from me and if there are any other simpler suggestions first that would be great.

Cheers

Hi Julian - this is not going to be easy to diagnose on a Forum - it does need hooking up to Diagbox and identifying the fault codes as these systems can be horrendous to troubleshoot. Even with those, it may need further examination - and not every garage has sufficient experience of these systems.

It may be a matter of the actual gearbox control mechanism, or the calibration of the clutch / gearbox grid, actuator issues etc. For these systems and where there is a lack of a specialist who knows these systems, I would suggest getting it booked into Citroen - it may save mucking about, additional costs and second guessing taking it from place to place in the long run.

They are essentially only a standard gearbox and clutch system - which are rarely the issue apart from normal wear and tear, but it's the electro-hydraulic actuators, ECU and control systems that can be a problem to diagnose.

Thanks Marc, I rather thought that might be the case 😳

It turns out that she took it to a dealer who couldn’t fault it

I did look for the specific issue you mentioned regarding 4th gear and although there are a mountain of technical issues with these - that particular one wasn't there  so, hence my suggestion. To be fair, although they have access to technical support themselves in France, no 2 dealerships are the same and some have will have more experienced technicians than others - take the younger techs / apprentices that were probably in nursey school 14 years ago when these systems were introduced. :-D

Thanks Marc for your further thoughts.

Yep, I know exactly what you mean about the younger techs :)

I wonder if they play computer games on the computer while Diagbox is plugged in ;)

Cheers

Thanks, that’s a good idea.

She lives in Hanwell in London - not sure if there’s a Lexia or Diagbox owner near there.

Even though I’ve got a Diagbox myself a I can’t say I fully understand it but I wonder if a later car would be better on Diagbox rather than Lexia ?

Cheers
