Citroen Relay 2008 ECU replacement

Post by Dollywaggon »

HWMO left the radio on for some long time in his 2008 Relay and it flattened the battery. He charged the battery up but the van wouldn't start.

Luckily we have two friends who run heir own independent garages. So one of them plugged ther diagnostics machine in on our drive and it came up with a number of fault codes which after much thought, head scratching and consulting with more experts led to the conclusion that the ECU must be broken. All fuses and power supplies etc were checked and appeared OK.

Given the apparent enormity of this, a second opinion was sought and a different machine came up with yet more codes and inconclusive diagnosis.

We decided that the easiest and cheapest way to confirm the assessment that the ECU was broken was to send it to ECU testing to be checked. This only costs £45 with a three day turnaround. Sure enough they confirmed that the ECU was faulty. They didn't hold a replacement.

We have got the faulty one back in our possession and were hoping to be able to obtain a second hand ECU, get it tested by ECU testing and then have it reprogrammed to match the van. There is no shortage of second hand ECUs, however, having just spoken to ECU testing, they are saying that they can't reprogramme one, which we are taking to mean can't reprogramme an ECU of that type.

It is a Viseon with hardware number 9661256980 and software number 9665066380.

I have spoken to the Citroen main dealer but they weren't prepared to suggest any solution beyond having a new ECU fitted at a cost in the region of £2000!

At the moment it is looking like leaving the radio switched on is going to wtite off a perfectly good, serviceable van and we are devastated and incredulous that that should be the case.

Has anyone on the forum had a similar experience and managed to resolve it? The whole ECU thing seems shrouded in mystery to us so would be grateful for any advice out there.

The figure may seem high, but this is likely because the engine ECU and the BSI (the main computer in the vehicle that manages the other ECUs) along with the transponder chips are matched pairs, and the dealer will only supply a new one - which costs anywhere around the £1300-1500 + mark plus the labour. I think you have a 2.2 Diesel from that part number. They are available second hand at about £500 if you search on that part, but it will need pairing.

Have a chat to these people:

https://www.cartechelectronics.com/plug ... 0-dcu-102/

They provide options for doing this, depending on the variant of the ECU

Thanks a million givemeabreak. Your internet search returned something ours didn't! Our ECU is now on the way to them to re-programme the replacement. Fingers crossed it will all work out and that there are no faults beyond the ECU that are stopping it starting.

Thanks again givemeabreak. Fantastic customer service from cartechelectronics. Refurbished and reprogrammed ECU fitted today and the van is running again. Would have been fixed before now but we have been on holiday!
