Panic Buying Idiots

Post by GiveMeABreak »

Thought I'd seen it all until I saw this: - I mean really, 3 x 1L water bottles emptied in the bin and filled with petrol?

I hope she gets exposed for her stupidity. Apart from the obvious danger, I suspect she is falling foul of the 'The Petroleum (Consolidation) Regulations 2014 (PCR)', which came into force on1 October 2014 which state:

Containers must have a nominal capacity:
  • no greater than 10 litres if made of plastic;
  • no greater than 20 litres if made of metal;
  • Have a total capacity between 10% and 15% more than the nominal capacity;
  • be made of either metal or plastic that is suitable and safe for the purpose and
  • will not significantly degrade due to exposure to petrol or naturally occurring ultraviolet radiation;
Be designed and constructed so that:
they are reasonably robust and not liable to break under the normal
conditions of use;
  • the escape of liquid or vapour is prevented;
  • petrol can be poured safely from them;
  • they are not unsteady when placed on a flat surface;
Be marked or labelled in a legible and indelible form with:
  • the words ‘PETROL’ and ‘HIGHLY FLAMMABLE;
  • an appropriate hazard warning sign;
  • the nominal capacity in litres;
  • the manufacturer’s name and the date and month of manufacture.
I don't think 'Evian' or 'Volvic' will cut it to be honest.... :roll:

Depending on what the bottles are made of, she might find that her car now smells very strongly of petrol.......

Idiot! [-(

I must say, I would have blown the whistle on that, and got her stopped by station staff, bottles confiscated. No time for that sort of thing.

One of the tactics used during a previous fuel shortage period was the exercise of a MINIMUM PURCHASE OF £30, which put a stop to endless small toppings-up. Doesn't seem to have been mentioned this time round.
Large signs to that effect along the queue would have a good few dropping out.

There was one woman did the same - filling water bottles with petrol.
Her daughter found one and drank from it with the expected unpleasant result.
The woman tried to sue the petrol station for selling her the (full) water bottles.

Another filled a wheelie bin - that the petrol dissolved.

It never ceases to amaze me at the basic stupidity of some people - but then again, I blame some of the nonsense they are teaching kids now - which does not bode well for future generations.

Ha! Just try enforcing that. You don't know until the pistol is replaced that a low amount has been taken.

Then the conversation goes something like "I'm sorry I only have cash with me and I've only a tenner note".
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

That sounds like a bogus story on several levels.

I can't believe that a fuel station would allow a wheelie bin next to fuel pump for more than a few moments before someone rushes out to stop the process. Also, wheelie bins are made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) which not only doesn't dissolve in petrol but is the plastic used to make legal spare fuel containers.

Clear signs needed:
1. This station requires payment before filling.
2. Minimum fuel purchase £30.

Found some words -- All the aspects of the current situation are so very sad. It is indicative that the general public, not including FCF members of course :-D , have reached a sorry state of "As long as I'm alright Jack!" which. when combined with the total loss of discipline in schools and the resulting lack of education in our current and future generations can only result in the loss of social responsibility and goodwill necessary to make a society thrive. I am actually relieved to be retired and not have to put up with this ludicrous behaviour myself. I'll just keep the car in the drive, order my supplies online and concentrate on the better things in life, like the FCF!! :) :)

When was the last time you spent a day in a local school, though?
Easy to make that sort of comment, but generations have said the same.
Despite various unhelpful edicts and prescriptions from above, today's school students are massively better informed and equipped than previous generations. And just look at what they have to cope with....!

Having spent 17 years as a head of department in a West Sussex comprehensive school, I do know what I'm talking about.

Stupidity and 'lack of common sense' isn't limited to today's adults and youngsters, and schools are seriously committed to minimising both, despite lengthy periods without adequate resources. 'Old Chalky' and dead-end schools are something from the history books nowadays, as any time spent with working school staff would rapidly reveal.

I'm very pleased to hear that Chris regarding the current schools. My ex was a childminder as is my friend in Elstree which together with my own children add up to a reasonably broad experience of the children's developmental processes over the last 45 years. Admittedly I have not had any in school time for 3 years but the results of the last 30 years work are out there for all to see!!
On a different track perhaps it would be better if we could deal with the root cause, lack of HGV drivers, rather than the resulting symptoms!!

Age, gender and background doesn't get restricted in these situations. You will find selfish, grasping, thick as 2 shorts individuals from 9 to 99, of all persuasions
and backgrounds. Please don't drag stereotypes into this (or other) situations. Let's just agree that the sensible ones among us have to share the costs of other's greed and stupidity. Until we all as a society find a way to name and shame individuals into conforming to societies' norms without the vitriol and hate that seems be prevalent just now, then we are doomed to continue as we are just now.
