TCM Oil Life Counter Reset

Post by 508Allure »

Is a TCM oil counter reset essential as we have had 4 x drain/fills with JWS3324 on our 2014 508 over the past 12 months but we don't have Planet/Lexia?

I contacted the local PSA specialist who has this software but he didn't know what I was talking about and doesn't reset anything when he changes transmission fluid, so I am at a loss.

I see some members offer a diagnostic service but I don't see any way of contacting them, which may be down to my newbie status?

Our 508 is located in Lytham St. Anne's on the Fylde Coast but it's also often in Flint near Chester.

Thanks.

Yes it is essential. The Gearbox ECU adapts the gearbox system to account for ageing oil and the quality of the oil over time.

Therefore the oil counter has to be reset after you've finished your subsequent oil changes so the ECU knows this and adapts accordingly. If the 'specialist' doesn't know this, time to find another one who does.

See my posts here for further details in this thread:

Either take it to a dealer and ask them to reset the gearbox oil counter on account you have had the oil changed and they will do it for you - should take no more than a few minutes - so expect at least a 30 minute diagnostic charge.

Bear in mind, although we update the list as often as we can, not all members are active on the Forum all the time, so it may take a while for a reply - and please remember current lockdown restrictions may make this difficult at present.

Marc,

Thank you very much for your reply and confirming the reset should be done. I have messaged Trainman as he's not far from me and I am going to try Paul over in Liverpool.

Thanks again.

Best of luck - I know Steve (Trainman) has done this operation himself as he has vehicles with AM6 gearboxes.

I've never had anything to do with auto boxes. Whereabouts would the reset process be? I'm running Diagbox 7.58 which I'm sure will be fine.

From the main Diagbox menu once you've connected up and confirmed VIN, go to the REPAIR menu and look for the option "BVA_AM6 Reading of the oil wear counter". It should have the current value there with an option to edit this and reset it.

I managed to get the oil life counter reset locally but the transmission didn't seem to benefit in any way whatsoever but at least it is done.

What did make a noticeable difference was disconnecting the battery for 24 hrs followed by a BSI reset. Changes are now much smoother, especially 2-3 and 3-4 plus a little faster too. It also seems to be in 5th on certain stretches of familiar road where previously it would be in 4th and it is also keener to drop a gear when required.

I think I might do the battery disconnect every 6 months plus it's a good opportunity to recondition the battery every other disconnect.

The oil counter reset may not make an immediate difference, but it does determine how the ECU adapts the system to cope with ageing oil over time.

Pleased the reset has made some difference - it doesn't do any harm to do this if you are experiencing any glitches.

I agree the oil counter reset is definitely worth doing but I would also totally recommend disconnecting the battery for 24 hrs or so after you have done so.

The transmission in the 508 seems to be getting smoother by the day, with changes now all but imperceptible and they were pretty smooth prior to changing the fluid.
