C4 Picasso 2 Spacetourer Oct2018 wheels seized on

Post by rmunns »

I did try to find reference to this problem on this forum, but didn't.

My neighbour, with a Pug3008, had just the same problem.

Handbrake on. Slightly loosen wheel nuts. Jack up car, take out wheel bolts. Cannot take wheel off. Put back a bolt for security, half a turn off tight. Mallet behind tyre....... doesn't work. Put wooden chock under inside of tyre, lower jack. Wheel still stuck. All bolts back, half-a-turn off tight, drive car 50m and back.

Success.

Carry on as normal with removal. Wire brush (copper bristles) mating surfaces on wheel and hub. Apply slight coat of copper grease to each face.

Will that do? I am just afraid of the serious aggro that would occur with having to change a wheel on an autoroute. I need to be sure I can easily remove the wheels if I need to.

Any other tips, please, for this problem?

When I have had difficulties removing a wheel I have found that kicking the top of the wheel with the underside of your heel usually works. Don't EVER kick the bottom of the wheel like this, as if it then does come off your lower leg could get clobbered. The copper slip grease should help to prevent the wheel sticking in future (I do that, and also a smear onto the threads of the wheel bolts).

Yes, James, I did that with my heel several times (all 4 wheels were tight). Each time with a bolt holding the wheel, but loose by half a turn. Also bashed tyre from the back with wooden mallet. No joy. Taking the car for a very gentle 50-100 metre drive did the job each time, with three or four bolts in, very close to being seated. Too loose and the risk is a tipped seize or damaged bolt threads.

Glad I did it, should save a lot of grief if I have to change a wheel on the road.
