Citroen C3 2012 - DPF / Fuel Additive / Fuel Additive Pump

Post by Umair »

I have a 2012 Citroen C3, 1.6 Diesel.

Error's came up as follows:

1. DPF filter detected clogged
2. Fuel additive reached maximum level
3. Fuel additive pump error
4. Car radiator switches on as car starts and only shuts down 5 minutes after car shuts down.
5. Car was in limp mode, struggling to get any power up hills.

Took it to various mechanics and all wasted time and quoted costs in access of £1,000 (car worth less than that).

After reading these and other forums, found out that it could all be down to the fuel additive pump (placed together with the fuel additive pouch towards the rear bottom right hand side of the car). Purchased 2nd hand from ebaya and replaced it, cleared the codes through £10 OBD2, started the engine and drove for 5 minutes. Engine light came on again, however drove another 10 minutes and it all went away. After testing the old fuel additive pump, it was not working hence all the codes.

All the errors resolved. Its been a week, fingers crossed it stays fine now.

Excellent result. One more car kept out of the scrap-yard and able to contribute towards an extended working life.

You may find some of those errors coming back - as replacing the additive pump and pouch won't be sufficient. You need to tell the engine ECU that the additive has been topped up by resetting the additive counter to zero. It is not physically measured, so needs to be done.

Secondly, not sure how many miles it has done, but it may also be flagging the DPF warning up if it has exceeded or is near the maximum amount of additive that has been injected into the filter. It will need cleaning or replacing at near the maximum mileage as it will be filling up with ash and other engine residue, oil particles and Cerine form the additive that can't be burned off through regneneration.

So keep an eye on that.

Thanks Marc. Noted and will monitor it.

As for the reset of the additive pouch, we didnt top it up so not sure if it should be reset as replaced as we didnt replace the pouch. It was around 75% full. The additive pump motor seemed to have stop working.

Ok, that should be ok then - if the pump was not metering out any additive, it should not have been adding this into its calculations - so leave it as it then.
