Nicely presented, and familiar I must have watched some of her previous presentations maybe even that one . Much prefer that sort of style and content to the general loud rants of some presenters.

Plenty of promising new battery chemistries in the lab, but on an industrial scale Lithium Ion is the king.

The lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO 4 battery) or LFP battery (lithium ferrophosphate), is a type of lithium-ion battery using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4) as the cathode material, and a graphitic carbon electrode with a metallic backing.

It scores on safety, reliability and longevity and is cheaper than other Lithium Ion Batteries but its energy density is less. Speculation here on Electrek that TESLA who already use the cheaper LiFEPO 4 batteries in some versions of the model 3 built in China, will also use them in the much trailed $25,000 Model 2 on the way.

The article quotes from BYD of the benefits of their "blade" architecture over conventional LIFepo 4 enabling a safer cell and a higher overall pack energy density.

While Battery innovation in research institutes and universities across the globe continues apace with promising "breakthroughs", on an industrial scale these are the players who make things happen....LG Energy Solutions, Panasonic, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovations and the biggest of them all CATL.

Not the northern powerhouse or the European Powerhouse....the far-east powerhouse and its getting bigger all the time.

The players Johnson Matthey, Faraday Institution, Britishvolt, Oxford University, UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, Emerson & Renwick and University of Warwick

Dribs and drabs of news, and they are aiming for a 2023 production start of the first 10 GWh phase. The project will be built in three phases each of 10GWh to a total capacity of 30GWh by end-2027 onwards. I'm waiting for a direct link up with an auto manufacturer.

“Nothing may ever surpass lithium in performance,” Zhenan Bao, a chemical engineer at Stanford University, said in 2017. “But lithium is so rare and costly that we need to develop high-performance but low-cost batteries based on abundant elements like sodium.”

Sodium Ion is a battery chemistry which has been around a while, but its currently getting a push on strategic, and economic grounds in China, and CATL, which is China's and the World's largest lithium ion battery maker, have recently released details of their Na-Ion first generation cells.

Difference being scale of investment and the Chinese development being actioned through the largest industrial Li-ion battery maker in the world and ahead in the race towards industrialisation of the tech.
