Writing this whilst on holiday 6 hours away from home, with 2 kids and wife. Woke up yesterday to the clutch on my 2015 2.0 Diesel, manual, DS5, 1955 edition that just fell away when pressed. Like it was no longer connected, zero resistance and it twanged to the floor and stayed they unless flicked back up. Car could be turned on still, but not put into gear.

Called RAC and they noticed the hydraulic fluid that feeds the clutch has drained, it had slowly leaked. Must have happened through the night as I'd noticed no issues the day prior.

Was towed to a garage and dropped with them and given a courtesy car - a POS Twingo with a broken CD player with ZZ Top album stuck in it, blessing or a curse this, depends on personal taste - as I was driving back to our holiday let, I get a call from the garage, they said "did you have any idea how much of a job this is" I pause, remember I'm not a mechanic and say "no, I have no idea" he then went on to say "well, it's a 15 hour job to the tune of £2200" he went on to say "your two back tires only have 2mm left on them". After retrieving my phone from a nearby hedge and popping a lozenge into my mouth to sooth my throat from the 5 straight minutes of screaming profanities at an innocent sheep in a field I wondered, is this ok? I'm no mechanic as I told the mechanic earlier, but does that sound right to y'all?

Effectively, I need someone to say, "yep, it's a 2K job" to make me feel like I'm not being screwed (in a bad way).


Summary - is £2k+ normal to fix a leaking clutch slave cylinder?

At a guess the slave cylinder is fitted internally in the gearbox so you have to take the gearbox off to replace it. Hopefully the cost will include changing the complete clutch assembly - which might need changing anyway if it's been contaminated with clutch fluid - and possibly the flywheel as well if it's a DMF type (dual mass flywheel), which it probably is.

How many miles has the car done? This might make you feel better or worse depending whether it's high or low!

Has it gone to a main dealer?

15 hours would suggest removal of the entire engine, which is probably the 'official' route, but it can almost certainly be done by only removing the gear box, if necessary only moving it back enough to get access to the clutch. The parts clutch / DMF / cylinder are probably £500 aftermarket, nearer £1000 at the dealer. I would expect you could get it done cheaper if you shop around, but being away from home means you may have to get it transported, adding to the cost.

Officially, if the clutch slave cylinder is replaced in situ then labour time is 0.60 for the replacing and 0.30 for the bleeding on a DS5 DW10CTED4. So no - but depends on what else they are doing....

You really need to go back to the garage and ask them exactly what it is that they are proposing to do for that money.

@GiveMeABreak Marc, do you know from other sources that the engine is that type?

I'm just going by the most likely diesel engine fitted to the DS5 for the year. That's the official dealer time for doing just that job in situ as said - so there must be a lot more going on as Richard mentions.

I suppose we should really find out if this is the exact engine using the reg or VIN as there are some 2.0 HDi variants on this car that use an internal Clutch slave cylinder.

That was my first suggestion as a possibility!

Well after my mess around with a faulty fan switch killing batteries and garages not knowing… today I am presented with this very problem 10 metres from arriving home from work the clutch hit the floor!!!!

Any advice would be gratefully received. 2013 2.0 hdi

Can you see any clutch fluid leaking out anywhere? if it just went to the flood with no warning then i would expect to see fluid somewhere under the car.
As above as well really, need the Reg or VIN to determine which engine/gearbox setup you have. It could be an internal or external slave cylinder. If its internal that's not great news. Thats not to even say the slave cylinder is the issue. Could be something as simple as a pipe popped off, Really need to see where the fluid has gone.

Thanks for replying couldn’t see any fluid on the floor or under the bonnet. VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]. Thanks in advance 🤞

Good news, you have an external slave cylinder.
Have you tried pulling the pedal back up & trying to pump up some pressure in it again?

If the pic shows. There a lot of fluid splashed around the lower right and inside the engine guard and a large puddle on the road. I assume as above it possibly the slave ?
