Hello all, my first post here, though I have history with Peugeot’s and Citroen’s I remain ridiculously un-mechanical.

But needs must and I think I’m going to have to fix this if it’s going to be fixed.

My issue is with the energy saving mode in my 2016 c4 Grand Picasso Feel. The engine starts just fine- never a problem. When I turn the engine off though there’s the energy saving mode. No way to sit in the car and listen to the radio, no lights, no power from 12v points throughout even with the engine running.

Anyone got some things I can check?

What's the battery age?
Many shops will test your battery for free. and it takes no more than a minute.
Worst part is to get access to the battery terminals :)

If you've never changed the battery, im 99% sure that's the culprit.
The cars computers can sense the battery's health. and disable AUX power, for radio, ports etc.
My tailgate stopped working due to a dead battery, and i got engine light and fault codes on various systems. The engine started just fine tho.
Battery tester reported "Dead" 8% life left :D

It's by design, so either your battery needs a good overnight trickle charge or needs replacing. To do a proper battery test it ideally should be done using proper battery testing equipment./ My dealer had mine in overnight for Stop Start testing, ran all the tests and left it charging overnight - battery reported 98% the next day and Stop Start began working. After 1 day Stop Start never worked again, so I'm leaving it like that.

There are a lot of electrical systems on the car and a lot of ECUs - some of the systems on the vehicle do make a slight drain on the battery after the engine has been switched off (Alarm, RCD circuit waiting for a signal from the remote fob, EGR valve operation to help prevent sticking, etc.). These days 5 years can be about the life of a battery. But if you do a lot of short runs or stop and start journeys, there's little opportunity for the battery to charge and it takes a fair bit out oi the battery just starting, yet alone running all the electrical systems and air conditioning - so I would give it a good overnight charge for 24 hours if you can.

My C5 turns all the extras off after thirty minutes even with a good battery, is there an adjustment somewhere to increase or reduce the time before it kicks in, I think that's what the op is asking.

No Eric, as the BSI no longer directly controls the energy management and there is no setting to extend the post engine off power availability times. The electrical management is now handled by the Battery Charge Status Unit and if the battery is in a weak condition it won't give you much time at all if any.

It takes quite a lot of time to recharge the power used for starting the engine - and can be anywhere up to 7-15 minutes or so to replace the energy used for starting, depending on lots of factors. But lots of short trips won't help and using phone chargers and other accessories all take their toll on the battery. Over time the battery's capacity to hold a charge diminishes, so it can never be fully charged to original capacity, so over time , although it may start ok, it will hold less charge and will drain more quickly.

Indeed - the batteries and / or charging systems today are not up to the job for all the equipment and systems they have been continually adding. If fact they have been doing the old shavings of a Mars Bar routine again - saving money and removing equipment. My Aircross now has an enhanced battery, but no other voltage retaining / ultra capacitor to boost energy and no regenerative braking either now.

So as long as the manufacturers can put a new battery on - get the certification, they really can't give a fig if it isn't up to the job and packs up after a few months. So the tech is totally useless now and stop start never works without a near 100% charged battery.

Thanks guys, I’ve only had the car a year but assume the battery is the original so it seems likely it’s that. Should I just look to replace it do you think? I assume that’s not the simple pop down to Halfords and get the cheapest available that I had to do for my old Citroen AX nearly 20 years ago?

Not really - get the best battery you can afford that as a minimum meets the requirements of your vehicle's original.

The size of the battery and location / position / orientation of the terminals are also essential as there is not a lot of room nowadays under the bonnet. Also if you have the Stop and Start system, you will need a certain type of battery - either an EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) depending on your vehicle specifications and what was originally fitted. Getting the wrong battery can reduce the life considerably on vehicles with Stop Start, as standard batteries are not designed for the cyclic durability and charge acceptance of the other types.

Let me have your VIN and I can advise on the correct battery code for your vehicle.

Ok, so you should have a 760A/70AH. You have Stop & Start system, so need an Enhanced Flooded Battery (note the 'EF') marking on the battery as in the picture below:

This is the minimum specification:

Personally, I'd recommend a YUASA battery - they are recommended by many people here as a high quality battery. The Yuasa code for the recommended battery for your Picasso is: YBX9096. YUASA sell them for £252, but you can get them for much less - like here from the battery shop at £111 inc. VAT:

No problems, if fitting yourself, please do follow the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure before disconnecting and refitting the battery to avoid any electrical issues. :wink:
