2014 Peugeot Expert 2.0HDi DPF Life Expectancy

Post by Edhertz »

Hello All,
Can someone tell me what the reasonable lifespan of a dpf on a 2014 Peugeot Expert 2.0 HDi van is expected to be? Van has clocked 122602 miles and the dpf warning symbol has come on with a message 'seek help from a garage' or something similar. The van was taken back to the dealer from whome it was very recently purchased ( 3months parts and labour warrenty) who declared that it was probably a sensor as they were always going wrong. Van returned four days later with fault cleared and all seemingly well. I have the Lexia 3 Diagbox V07.02 which has Peugeot Planet 2000 and shows the Expert 3 so should I be able to get an idea of the health of the dpf from this? Service history does not indicate that the filter's been changed. Would those nice car dealers sell you vans with known faults on them...... perish the thought?! Thanks for replies in advance.

Life of a DPF.......depends how it's been driven, how far etc. Mines clocked nearly 200K miles on the original, but was motorway. You can see the history of the DPF in the a sub menu, use Diag, not PP. It'll tell you last regens, av regen etc, the quantity of Eolsys ( however it's speeled) is a guess. Plug it in and have a look. You can also get live data from the same menu.
DON'T believe the dealer, they sell cars.

It is possible (with care and the RIGHT chemicals) to clean DPFs so they carry on working properly. The main thing to remember is that the core is made of ceramics, and is fragile if not properly handled. I do NOT know how to clean them myself, but if you were to search on the forum you should find that information.

122k is about right for a DPF. They can be cleaned to some degree, but you won't be able to restore them to an 'as new' condition as there are miniscule particles of Cerine and other matter that can't be burned off and are extremely hard to remove. A deep clean is you best bet or get it replaced, but regardless, you will need to tell the engine ECU that it has been replaced.

If doing this I would also top up and reset the additive counter as it records the weight of Cerine in grammes that is dumped into the filter over its lifetime and when it estimates it has reached this level it will flag a warning up. Also tell the engine ECU you have replaced the DPF if replacing it or deep cleaning it.

Thanks for replies folks. Dpf filter renewal cost sounds like a pretty good reason for a moving a fleet van on. Is it possible to play about with the sensors or software in some way to prevent the dpf warning light comming on? Hush my mouth at the thought!

No and we don't condone that here sorry - we've had many members here that have been the victims of people crippling emissions / gutting DPFs and apart from it being illegal, leaves other owners the misery of buying a lemon and huge bills to rectify.

DPFs are not as expensive to replace as they were in the early days - but should be considered a fair price to pay for cleaner air and the additional MPG associated with a diesel.

It does not cost that much to get them cleaned in situ either.

My apologies I have given you the wrong impression; this was an not an action I was seeking to undertake. I was asking if it was possible to prevent the fault warning light comming on in the software thus masking the fault in the hands of dodgy repairers. I suspect the answer to my question is 'no' since the source code would need to be changed in some way. Completely agree regarding lemons and is reason I asked the question given van has 3m warranty. I'll end with.... 'buyer beware'.

Hi Alan, no problems and I appreciate what you are saying.

The control mechanisms are very heavily integrated into the Engine ECU and the BSI so are linked to the various sensors and other ECUs for command, control and diagnostics.

Unfortunately, these are considered a ''service' item - but are intended to last a considerable proportion of the vehicle's life. There are quite a few places now that can undertake a DPF clean nowadays.
