HELP!!!! Xantia LHM leak with pictures

Post by admiral51 »

Hi All
My Xantia has sprung an lhm leak.
Own work
Own work
Own work
Own work
Own work
Own work

It is coming from the n/s front area behind the wheel. It appears to be a return line and the plastic elbow below what i think is a valve ? is where it is dripping from.
When trying to dry it off the elbow came away from the valve but it will push back on, hard to see if the elbow is a push fit both ends but i am assuming that it is, but push back onto what i refer to as the valve it felt as if the end was being pushed into the valve.

I know i am useless at describing things technically but hopefully the above and the pictures will help :)

Colin, I don't know the Xant but it looks like a return elbow as you said. There are a number of 't''s as well. The go hard over time and split. Does the other end have a black plastic pipe up it? (Or possibly clear). If so get some rubber pipe and make one up. The black plastic pipe will have a bulge in it to keep it in place.

Hi Pete
Yes the other end has a black pipe going into it. Do i read your reply as being that the part i refer to as a valve should have a male fitting for the elbow to fit to?
If so to my untrained eye and feel it feels as if that is missing or being pushed up into the valve.

I'd guess so, it would make sense but the green fitting may the 'male'? Does it pull off the valve? It may be split? Is the valve rubber? Sorry can't help you any more, never seen one.

Pete yes the main part of the valve feels like rubber, and looking at it in a picture rather than in situ it looks like the rubber part screws into the metal( rusty) top part particularly because of the way it is shaped/tapered and appears to have a top that would accept a spanner.
Thanks for your help much appreciated

Colin, can you take some additional photos, so we can positively identify the part which the return elbow connects to? Take several photos, to show the exact location (not all in close-up).

What I have in mind normally has a small spigot which goes into the rubber sleeve/elbow (the sleeves are usually just short lengths of 3∼4mm ID rubber tube). As said, with age, these split and leak. Easy to replace.

It it is the rubber elbow that has failed (I can't be 100% sure from the photos), there are after-market replacements available from Turkey: https://www.drxantia.com/index.php/en/p ... 267-detail

Chris i will need to take extra photos tomorrow as right now the car is at the back of the driveway but if i understand correctly when i tried to dry the elbow off it came away from what i have called a valve, however there was a 2-3mm (guessing) bit sticking out where the elbow would fix onto.
Mike would i be correct in assuming that the elbow would actually fit up inside the valve hence my feeling of it pushing into the valve ? i was expecting to see something like an inline fuel filter male fitting and thought something had broken away.
Thanks for the link 8-)

I will try and take some pictures tomorrow but the picture that does not show the leak shows where it is dripping onto so was trying to give some perspective.
If it helps the handbrake cable is closest to the chassis in the bottom picture, so hard to get a wider picture with everything in the way on the driveway.

Really appreciate the help as always this place is amazing =D>

I think that this is the part you are looking at:
borrowed from internet...
borrowed from internet...
It is the security valve, sometimes called the safety valve or priority valve. It shuts off the pressure to the suspension (etc.) if the system pressure drops, to allow the brakes to keep working a little longer. The blue connector at the other end is the switch for the "STOP" light.

As you can see it has a spigot that the rubber elbow pushes on to.

Mike it doesn't look like that from memory it seems to have a couple of metal lines that appear to angle towards the top of it (the rusty end). Can't take any pictures as i borrowed the boys car today and left my car key and house keys in the lorry so can't move it 😭
The spigot on the end looks much bigger than what i could see when the elbow was off.
Will try and get pictures tomorrow

The photo that Mike has posted shows a valve with a protective cap on the fluid-return spigot. In practice, the short spigot is only 3∼4mm in diameter, and about 10mm long.
I think there were slightly different designs of valves, and likely the pipework could take off in slightly different positions. All provide the same functions, as Mike describes.

Chris if that is the case and looking at the length of the elbow would i be correct in that the elbow itself would push into the valve as the spigot would not be long enough like on an inline fuel filter ?
And thanks again the feedback and help here is second to none

The small spigot goes into the rubber elbow.
Small (properly circular) hose clip - or cable tie - optional, for a secure fit.
Return hoses are under negligible pressure.

Okay i have to admit yet again i got it wrong and Mike got it spot on :)
I have now been able to jack the car up high enough to get underneath (supported with axle stands ) and it is the security valve as in the picture Mike posted.
There is a spigot for the elbow to push onto and it is definitely the elbow at fault as it is very loose.
Does anyone know of the part number so i can search within the UK as the one Mike linked to is in Turkey.
Thanks again you lot are special.

Still waiting on an email conformation to allow me to purchase the part from Dr Xantia so in the meantime i will probably try and use a couple of cable ties to clamp the elbow to the spigot, not ideal or pretty but fingers crossed will do the job.
