Bit more on 5792...and a Watford connection :-D

https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotive ... lton-hall/
More latterly, 5972 Olton Hall has gained fame as the locomotive used in the Harry Potter film series. Owned by David Smith and painted red following its restoration to working order, the locomotive was selected for use as the engine for the ‘Hogwarts Express’ in 2001 and subsequently used in filming at Leavesden Studios,Kings Cross and also on the West Highland Line between Mallaig and Fort William between 2001 and 2010, painted in the fictitious ‘Hogwarts Railway’ livery and renamed as Hogwarts Castle. It currently carries a 10A (Carnforth) shedplate in recognition of its current home at Carnforth, although it often appears elsewhere in service or on display. 5972’s boiler certificate expired in 2014.

The locomotive is now on static display at The Harry Potter Museum at Warner Brothers Studios in Leavesden, near Watford and will remain there in the museum for two years.

Interesting Neil!! That is certainly the same setup as I remember although the station model was a larger scale!! However you have uncovered an interesting enigma there. The locomotive is numbered 5972 which is correctly named as Olton Hall which is a GWR Hall class loco. It was chosen as the loco used to pull the fictional Hogwaerts Express and painted red but the LMS just aint right!!! :-D

The "penny in the slot" Olton Hall was sold for $10,200 by Morphy Auctions Pennsylvania on 21st October 2017, and described as
COIN OPERATED OLTON HALL ENGLISH ARCADE TRAIN.

Amazing money for an American sale of an English model. Presumably it was the Harry Potter connection that generated that level!! :-D

Broad Street Penny-in-the slot Engine etc
I came across this before but failed to recognise the quote was from John Betjeman no less (writing in 1973), referring to the Broad street penny-in-the-slot engine of your youth MIck
In the ‘sixties, the magnificent iron roof over the train shed at Broad Street was removed. The large Lombardic buffet and the shops for City clerks were shut down, and in 1970 the scale model 4-4-0 engine, whose wheels went round if you put a penny in the slot, was either removed or stolen. Standing in the empty concourse at Broad Street today, one has a feeling of its former greatness.

A few steps back from the concourse will take you into what was once an enormous booking hall, whose timber roofs tower above the station shops. Along on the concourse now stands the 1914 War Memorial of the North London, a miniature version of the Cenotaph in Whitehall. Beyond it, incongruous and ridiculous, in red brick with pavement-light windows is a streamlined booking office for the few passengers who use this potentially popular line. May God save the Old North London!

Well at least you have found a reference to the loco I remembered, well done, although there does seem to be a discrepancy between my memory and John Betjeman's information. I wouldn't want to give up my belief that it was a 4-6-0 in favour of a significantly less awe inspiring 4-4-0 but I certainly have no evidence to offer so I will keep my memory for its glory even though it seems it may be flawed! :-D

Woodroff from train.PNG
Lyme Regis station when it was. Still here when we moved in track gone though. The building above the loco is Woodroffe school where my son went and grandchildren are now.

It would have been brilliant to be at that school when the railway was still fully operating, imagine the motivation in a metalwork class when you heard the timeless chuffing of a passing loco bringing supplies for the holiday makers!! :-D

Well its end of the month time again so as at the close of play today, what will your mile-o-meters on your fleet have clicked round to :?:

Fascinatingly random for number noticers, and last months submissions took us on a fascinating journey to a penny in the slot engine in a case on the former Broad Street Station remembered fondly by both John Betjeman and our Mickthemaverick :-D stimulated by this celebratory post, and a bit of random linking :-D

Here's 42506, appropriate to end of June mile-o-meter reading on the Leaf, at the aforementioned Station in 1960, from Flickr, link to the page here

720. And about fifty walking.

Yet another rubbish phone photo - no glasses is my excuse. Too close to focus was the real reason.

Most that this car has done since I bought it - by eight mile clocked a year ago.

Should be more next month as it is going on holiday to Wales tomorrow. Leaving me behind as usual.
I should go as my mother and grandfather were Welsh.
Maybe next year.

July has been a fairly average month giving me:

323 in MX3
1359 in Subaru
0 in Airbus 321
0 in RX400H

Total 1682

Quite a few pictures to choose from among the bus and railway networks but for something different how about a boat? :-D

Rather more than usual this month.
About 950 miles wasn't mine though.

A few miles in daughter's Megane - about 100 at a guess.
Not many miles walking.
None by any other means.
