C5 2.2hdi non runner

Post by gabrue »

Hi, I have a non starting c5 x7 mk 111 2.2 hdi
Lovely car, fine one day NR next morning. Will start with a wiff of easy start and run but wont start again. RAC listed these codes:
P1351, pre post heating relay control circuit fault
P16A0 engine overspeed recognition
P129B turbo 2 solenoid valve exhaust
P0183 fuel temp sensorA circ high input
P2563 turbo 2 solenoid valve exhaust
P0483 cooling fan rationality check malfunction
P023E overboost pressure
Seems like lots of codes that don't really point to anything specific that would stop it starting except with a squirt of something.
Any ideas? Sorry if this is the wrong place to post but I'm a newbie

Have now fitted new expensive hp fuel pump and new fuel filter. Seems like a lot of air in system. Was lots of jelly like crud in the fuel tank sender filter. Still not starting

You can ignore P1351. It seems all HDi engines throw that one up, and yet they work fine. I cannot help with the other codes, but that 'jelly' sounds like microbes that thrive in the diesel. Oh, and this thread is in the right place.

They do have glow plugs - all HDIs do.

It's just that they are rarely used to start the car unless extremely cold. The Glow plugs on HDi tend to be used more for pre and post heating to support particle filter regeneration.

P1351 means: Pre-heating relay circuit: Coherence; Relay supplied and glow plugs not supplied. The information from the preheating control unit indicates that the relay is open even though the ECU commands the closing of the relay for 2 seconds.

This will be either the:
  • Pre-heater plug
  • Electrical harness
  • Pre/post heating relay
We tend to ignore this one as the HDis will generally start perfectly well without them and there are rarely any issues with DPF regeneration.

No worries - sorry, I only just got round to seeing this post - please pop your VIN up (automasked on post submission) as there are 2 variants of the 2.2 and I will take a look at those codes for you tomorrow and put something up

I'll be interested to see what Marc comes up with but I'm with the OP in that these error wouldn't prevent a start.
The P0183 has the potential to screw with the fuel injected but I would expect the ECU to use a fall back default if the sensor is faulty. The other errors seam like intermittent issues whilst running unless there's a common power source for all the sensors and actuator valves.

If you can get it started with easy start that would lead me to suspect the starter motor not quite spinning the engine at the required 5-600 rpm to get ignition.

Right, we have fuel going back around the fuel rail pressure regulator now,so I'd like to try one of those but not a new one after spending £320 on the hp pump. It's a ford common part, just need to find one

I suspected as much - I don't have any real further info on the codes as they relate to the 2.2 175 DW12BTED4 engine. There is no further detail apart for the headline faults, sorry:

P16A0 Engine over-revving : Auto supply of the engine with oil
P129B Turbine valve position repeat signal 2 : The valve opens more than the reference value
P0183 Diesel fuel temperature signal : Short circuit to positive or open circuit or value too low
P2563 Turbine valve position repeat signal 2 : Turbine valve 2 stuck
P0483 Cooling function integrated into the ECU (fan unit) : Open circuit or temperature too high
P023E Turbo pressure signal (turbo 2) : Coherence between the 3 pressure sensors

Still not running. Now it seems that random codes are being thrown up due to an electrical issue possibly in the fuse box bsi. If this box is changed for a 2nd hand one will it have to be coded to the ecu and keys etc.?

Do you have access to a Lexia?
I'm about to embark on something similar on a MkII 2.2! I'll let you know how I get on later in the week.
However, I'm reminded of a problem I had with a C6 a few years back. I could get the engine running with easy start but not without! I was about to send the ECU off for testing when the nice man at the repairers mentioned that Citroens only use the cam sensor during start to check for sync with the crank and once running it's ignored. Turns out I had forgotten to plug it in when changing the engine loom, Doh!

Anyway, that's a long way of saying.. use Lexia to check for crank/cam sync.

The one I'm looking at is showing no sync and and no errors posted! Sensors are on order.
Random codes are usually a sign of a tired battery and I would ignore these until the real fault is fixed otherwise you'll end up chasing things that are not related. And yes, a BSI change will need to be coded to the car. I wouldn't go there unless you are 100% sure it's at fault and it's your last resort.
