SMEG headunit

Post by Y Cymro »

My car’s eMyWay sat nav works well enough but only displays the speed limits on Motorways and some trunk roads. I have the latest firmware per installed.

Just wondering if the newer SMEG or SMEG+ shows the limits on all roads?

It's nothing to do with SMEG, SMEG+ or any of the other Magnetti Marelli head units. It simply down to the information in the map data. This only contains speed limits for motorways, trunk roads and a few others for space reasons. The file sizes would be enormous if every road had speed limits associated with it not to mention the almost impossibility of keeping it up to date.

Out of interest, all the MM units use the same data so that's another reason that a different HU shows the same information.

Actually Paul, the file size wouldn’t be much larger if speed limits were to be displayed. If you think about it, the car’s GPS already has the speed limits for all road sections included, which are used to calculate journey times.
C5 satnav map files are provided by HERE (and possibly for all Citroen vehicles) and when I wrote to them a few years ago about this they confirmed that the HERE general database (https://wego.here.com) contains speed limit indicators on most if not all roads. My HERE iPhone app displays speed limits too. They also stated that “it is Citroen who selected to show the speed limits only on motorways in their navigation map products.”

As this is a Citroen decision I wondered whether speed limits are displayed in later model cars.

Not until much later models Steve.

My Aircross has speed sign recognition, so the road speeds are constantly updated and displayed on the dashboard LCD and the Heads Up Display. The mapping data is no longer provided by Here, but by Tom Tom, specifically for PSA and DS vehicles with Connected Nav systems. You can subscribe for additional speed camera updates on a yearly basis if you want those warnings integrated too.

I'm about to install a Dash Cam in mine today that also has speed camera alerts, so will put that to the test next week, which is a lot less than a subscription for this service from PSA. But I do find that the cruise control system is much more effective on this model with the speed sign recognition, as you can just press the button and it matches the legal speed for the road you are on. You do have to repeat this when the road speed limit changes, but I use it all the time now and it's like second nature.
