Citroen xasara ECU

Post by Leyk_b »

My citroen xasara 2002 2.0L has been at the garage for a while. The mechanic said I have to change the ECU and other parts. The current ECU is Magnet marell and the one I found is Bosch. Will it fit? And what's the original ECU brand?

ECUs should be replaced with the exact same type. I'm assuming, as you have not clarified, that you are talking about the Engine ECU. These are designed and programmed for specific engines, so no, you can't just put any old ECU in and swap them. Stick to the same part number. Also bear in mind that a BSI and the engine ECU and the vehicle transponder chip in the keys / fobs must be a matched set unless you have a virginised engine ECU, which must then be coded tot he BSI and programmed.

I found the whole ECU and BSI set with the key from a similar car. Same year and same model with the same part number. But the brand name is different. Would that make a difference?

A mechanic said if it's not the same brand that it wouldn't work. The one on the car was magnetic Marselli and the new one is Bosch. Is that a problem.
Thank you

You should stick to the part number - but it needs to be the correct part number. There are part numbers for the part that usually begin 96****** or 98*******, then there are hardware versions and software versions of the units which make a difference. Generally speaking, the engine ECUs tend to be the same for a vehicle range, but more commonly on some petrol models, several ECUs brands have been used - but these are always the same part number.

HW 9642427080

This is the part number for the ECU and it fits the one I found.

Whats the problem with the car that the makes the garage think the ECU is at fault?
Is this a Xsara VTS?
2001-2002 was the changeover point where the Xsara changed to CAN under the bonnet, the CAN & non CAN ecu’s wont be compatible.

Here is the thing. I'm a student. I bought the car off of an auction. There are no Citroen's in Ethiopia. The mechanic's don't know anything about the car. After a car wash the car won't start so I took it to a mechanic. They tried everything and said water has reached the ECU and it's not working anymore. And that I have to change the ECU along with the BSI and key. We don't have spare parts here so I found someone in Greece. The part number matchs but the brand of the ECU doesn't.
It's a Citroen xsara, 2002, 2.0L
chassis number VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff],
Engine number PSABFN10LH2906763920,

So your engine ECU is a MAGNETI MARELLI - 4MP2-03.

If I were you, I would check all the wiring connections and the fuses - especially those in the engine fusebox. It's very unlikely how washing a car could cause the issues (unless you had the bonnet open and got water on the electronics). If you suspect water damage, allow the components to dry out. If you have access to a code reader, try and see if there are any fault codes showing and put them up here.

I can't answer this I'm afraid without knowing the VIN of the donor vehicle, as mostly the petrol engined ECUs (EW10J4 / EW10) used by PSA were Magneti Marelli or Siemens ECUs. If the donor vehicle you are referring to has a Bosch ECU, it may well be a Diesel car and these are not compatible ECUs.
