Nemo key
I have a 2013 Nemo van, it’s very basic (what I wanted) no air con, no central locking, no electric windows etc etc, so today I went to get a key cut and I’m told it has a chip, a spare key is going to cost £55, I thought the only keys that were chipped were those with remote central locking?

Re: Nemo key
No, the chips are part of the immobiliser system. The vehicle reads the chip in the key or the fob when it's put in the ignition and an exchange of information occurs between the BSI and the engine ECU before the vehicle is authorised to start.

Re: Nemo key
Modern keys do have a chip that interfaces with the immobiliser system. When the key is turned an inductance coil (around the barrel) will fire up, looking for a recognised chip). If it finds a recognised chip it will allow the engine to start (normally by allowing the fuel pump to work). It is this chip system that helped reduce vehicle theft.
