V6 2.7.or 2.0 diesel?

Post by rogerc5 »

Oops I posted this in Renault by mistake.

I'm looking at 2 C5 x7s.
One has the v6 2.7 engine and the other the 2.0 160 bhp
The 2.7 is very smooth and has been well serviced etc.
Is it worth a punt or is the 2.0 a safer bet?
I will be grateful for opinions please.

From my own dealings here, there have been far less issues with the V6 than the later 2.0 163. The 163 2.0 DW10CTED4 had numerous Euro 5 tweaks to make it more fuel efficient and meet those standards, but this brought its fair share of issues. Everything runs hotter more quickly to get it to temp and there have been lots of issues with the air mixers and the electro valves on these.

By comparison there have been very few posts concerning problems with the 2.7 V6. Put it this way, If I was going to get another X7, and had your choice, I would plump for the 2.7 any day, unless it was the earlier sturdy and robust 2.0 140 DW10BTED4.

Thanks Marc
going back to have another look this week.
It has a good pedigree with an owner on this forum I think.

Isn't the 2.7 engine well known for snapping the crankshaft?
It certainly is in Land Rover and Jaguar circles.

The LRJ may have different implementations of these engines - they do on the 3.0 with how they treat the emissions using over-fuelling I believe - with engine lubrication suffering as a result of oil contamination, where PSA have the good old Eolys system to deal with that. But like anything - good, regular maintenance with good quality lubricants is your best friend.
