many thanks Marc, I will see if the mouse has done this car over, he did the screen wash pipes last month but now no starter on the key (ignition and dash work, no clicking or noise at all when turned to start)

he was very tidying with one of the acorn piles, they are all neatly placed inside the main engine fusebox :)

I am getting a click at the relay/fusebox in the engine bay when I turn the key to start, and i can get the car running by applying power to the solenoid.. maybe the issue i have is the fuse/relay box itself? I did try prising it apart to get at the relays but no joy there.. I still suspect the mouse has eaten a hidden wire somewhere..

i think that is the suspect Kenny, the good old 9667044980. there is a chance he's taken a wire out downstream of there, before the solenoid on the starter.. but I am not sure I can be bothered to find out yet, I may just replace the fuse/relay board first ;)

Guessing it's the PSF1 or the BSi1 in the diagram above

It may just be a coincidence and the board has failed anyway!

Out of interest, what's the 1031 on the diagram? my battery is measuring 12.4V at present, I don't recall a cut out for starting when the bettery voltage drops to low? Normally the car will be sluggish and loads of errors will appear on the dash.. mine just does nothing except the click in that relay area.. no lights dim etc

1031 is the Battery Charge Status Unit John. It is the demon device that monitors the battery state, health, temperature and tells the BSI when to engage energy saving mode. That is unless you've applied my Economy mode fix (mainly intended for Tourer owners with electric tailgate issues), but I also performed the fix on my X7 Saloon, as I was fed up with the 30 seconds tops of radio time allowed with ignition switched off!

thanks Marc, I have been enjoying about 15 mins of battery life until recently :) car is always in Economy mode now but isn't getting used much.. as said, that wouldn't cut the starter out of the circuit so not too bothered about it right now.. will look into the fix one day :)

John,

Worth testing the direct supply from battery to starter motor (BB01) then BB03 which supplies 1020 (relay for injectors) ?

Disconnect the 5 way yellow plug & feed pin 4 straight from the battery, if the starter turns the wiring from the BSM to starter is ok. Just make sure its in neutral before trying this.
P.S. the 5 way yellow plug will probably actually be grey, the yellow marker is on the underside.

thanks Wheeler and Kenny.

I did just try the grey (yellow base) pin 4 with +12v.. nothing..
however, the wire to the solenoid is slightly larger and white and may well go to the same plug, but as pin 2 ! I tried that anyway and the starter sprang into life... so if all else fails I may have an easy way to start it for now ;)

Yep, pin 2 is the wire to the starter solenoid.. can start the car ok by applying 12v to that. looks like it's marked 9550
hmm.. wonder what pin 4/ wire 100 was for then?

hi Kenny I think BB01 and BB03 are thick cables (alternator and starter) that usually meet at the starter before going on to the Batt.. I think.. ;)

Looks like the diagram is wrong, im finding this more & more lately, even when looked up by VIN. The Fiat based models seem to be the worst & im not just talking about a mislabelled pin number like this one, im talking completely wrong plug sizes & colours that don’t exist.
Double check the code printed on the wire, 100 is the starter exciter wire normally so it may just be a wrong pin allocation on the diagram.

maybe wheeler.. to be honest the thick white wire at pin 2 looks like 9550 and the slightly thinner wire to 4 (a feint shade of pink) is a similar number! not 100 anyway.

I tested continuity of pin 2 to solenoid and it was indeed the same wire. Glad i can use the car again, carry my little jumper wire :) .. quite sure it's a fault with the board though?

John

Had a chance to look at wiring diagram with my glasses on !

The wiring have several numbers on them which adds to the confusion

BB01/BB03 are power supply for starter motor and alternator and are activated by wire 100 which closes the switch at the solenoid. Wire 100 goes to engine fuse box grey connector with yellow collar.

Do you have continuity on BB01 from battery to starter motor ?

But what I understand you have continuity on the wire which runs between solenoid and Engine fuse box (PSF1)

Kenny

PS Is it your 160hp auto that is the problem child
