From a slight off-topic discussion on the "On your Bike" thread, of welfare orange juice and national dried milk, cod liver oil and malt extract, Steve confessed his liking for "Virol" originally a combination of red marrow extracted by the use of glycerol from the rib bones of cattle and the bones of calves, refined beef fat, diastatic malt (containing a mixture of amylases that convert starch into maltose and dextrin), eggs, lemon syrup and soluble phosphates.

You are most likely to find Virol advertising signs today at heritage railways..

An entry for the botany club, out and about I came across a war between two of our popular wild flowers! On one side of the hedge the little white Daisies have taken control:

but on the other side of the hedge the dandylions are mustering their troops ready for an assault across the road:

Of course they have sent out powerful scouts with determined efforts:

However there are two other contenders waiting in the wings ready to gobble up any unoccupied territory:

Someone has reversed into our bottom field gate and not done it any good at all, they are blooming expensive to replace so I am going to have to bodge it up somehow. Must have been someone at or visiting the farm, you would have thought they would have had the decency to tell me.

My two mysteries, the white one I planted a couple of years ago, just a stick with a root, labelled as Forsythia, the other from an M&S pot plant my daughter sent which I planted out but has been hidden in the shade of my Burberis for too long, now showing signs of flowering for the first time after I cut the Burb back.

So what are they .

The green one is a Camellia and the white one is probably a Spiraea 'Bridal Wreath', though you could do with digging it up and replanting it a little closer to the camera for a positive I.D.

I actually managed to get out into Hertfordshire's countryside today:

I mentioned in Room 101 that I had been replacing the worn out flourescent lighting system on a friend's aquarium with a modern LED unit. Despite the agro over the PSU I managed to get it sorted and she has just sent me this picture of the tank this evening saying how chuffed she is with the result!! :

Can you get those in the 'Growlux' colour?

I'm not sure what the 'growlux' colour is but you can get these in just white, white and blue, the one I fitted, or 'full spectrum' which adds red and green to the mix. If that doesn't answer your question Peter you'll have to clarify what 'growlux' is!!

I did consider fitting LEDs to my aquaria but wasn't sure that they would have a full spectrum.
The Growlux ones are quite expensive but do have a suitable spectrum.

Have similar ones in the vivarium that maintain reptile's vitamin D levels.

This is the one I bought Steve but it does come with the silly power supply. Available in various lengths and choice from pure white to full spectrum. I was very happy with the unit's build quality and ease of installation. I went for the model without timer!

I'm going back a bit Mick, I used them in the '60s, they gave a sort of mauve colour (I am colour blind) and were very good at making the plants grow. Fish keeping has changed a lot since then.

You can still get Growlux then?
