Ecu software

Post by Steveo »

Hi all
As some of you are aware some members who own C5s diesel (2008 onwards) are experiencing issues with either setting off smoothly or accelerating away and having a slight hesitation before the power comes in mostly between 1500 to 2000 revs
So does anyone know if the software on the ecu's are up to date or is there any software updates available and what is the cost if any from Citroen dealerships
Thank you
Regards
Steve

Hi Steve

They won't generally update the engine ECU unless there is a) an update and b) if there is an update for the specific ECU, whether it should be applied or not - this will usually depend on the hardware version of the ECU and the software version already installed. Reason being some updates can have a knock-on effect on other systems. They normally only release an update to fix specific issues that have been identified - and relevant to the build date and specific ECU involved.

If this is a requirement on certain models - that an update is needed, it will usually be flagged under an after sales campaign and can be determined from the VIN.

If, in the course of getting parts info for donating members, I see such an update, I generally point it out to them. :)

Hi Marc
OK cheers
The only reason I'm asking is that a friend of mine had seen something on auto data regarding a ecu software update (but of course this could have been for an earlier variant

Probably - there are many variants of engine ECU used in PSA vehicles depending on the engine used as I'm sure you know. Another factor is the type of emissions systems incorporated into the vehicles.

My Blue HDi for example, with DPF and SCR has just had to have an update to the engine ECU to fix an issue specifically with the Adblue dosing - so that would only be relevant to my specific engine ECU and was written to address this issue - but could not be applied to another type of ECU.

Hi Marc

Can You see the software update via VIN number?
Engine ECU, gearbox ECU, ...?

Or is it a matter of service with a direct diabox connection?

You have to connect diagbox (with a live connection) & attempt to carry out an update. It will either say the software is up to date or there is a newer version. You would need to do this separately for each ecu you want to check.
It’s actually a bit outdated, Ford IDS for example will scan all the ECU’s for updates in one go then the ECU highlights in red if there is an update available. Ford dealers even have dongles that plug straight into the OBD socket & can do specific updates without the need for diagnostics systems.

Hi,
thanks for the reply.
I know it needs to connect to the PSA server to download updates, I thought it could see through the VIN number if there is any update.

Only by checking via PSA servers as to whether there is an applicable update or not. The only time the VIN is useful is if there has been an after sales campaign launched to fix a specific issue and your vehicle falls into that category, which is then flagged up. I've just had one on mine for an Engine ECU update for the SCR injection system.

But there are some 'updates' that are actually downgrades! My BSI software was 'updated' on my X7 and that resulted in loss of Indexing Rear View Mirror Function in Reverse. I got that reinstated as I was furious that they did that without informing me of the consequences.
