Electric handbrake problem 508

Post by Lester8436 »

Hi there hoping someone can help.
I have a Peugeot 508 sw 2012 2.0
For the last few months I’ve been having problems with the electric handbrake.
Long story but essentially the original handbrake did not release one day (not long after a clutch change unsure of this has anything to do with it). Was told needed a new handbrake. I went to Peugeot to be told they are around £1200!!! So brought one off a scrap car. Fitted and calibrated it and worked for a day or so before it stopped working. The most common code was lack of communication with esp ecu, and also short circuit of
The motor.
Took to independent Peugeot “specialist “ who checked the car over and couldn’t find the fault except to
Say they thought either handbrake. Bsi. Or wiring.
Took a chance a brought another handbrake. Cheap off scrap car. Fitted and this one won’t work either. While testing it with diagbox. No matter what you do it releases. For example. Actuator test Apply handbrake (it releases itself all the way out to the point you have to
Open up the handbrake unit and wind the screw back in) if that makes sense. Calibration it just releases. Clear codes it releases. Every time to the point the cable is completely unscrewed from the handbrake motor.
While it’s connected the handbrake button is illuminated RED and the warning to release handbrake flashes up on dash when driving (along with all the other associated warning lights)
Some things I did. All before the latest handbrake was fitted.
Change battery
Change brake light switch.
Check all fuses.
Change handbrake button (this is a slightly different part number)

I plan on taking it to a auto electrician when I get some time but can anyone tell me anything else I
Can check/try advise to the auto electrician. Any help much appreciated.

It's highly likely to be a wiring issue. It's not unheard of for the looms under the engine fusebox to break a few outer wires under the weight of the loom. Given that you've changed some components and are having hte same or intermittent problems, this smacks of a break or short causing the intermittent or non-functioning of the system.

I would investigate the main wiring looms under the engine fusebox and look carefully for cracks or breaks.

If you pop your VIN up, I'll look at the ABS / ESP wiring diagrams for your vehicle as this controls the EPB.

Thanks for the wiring diagram. I had it in at auto electricians today and he couldn’t find any fault. He said he thinks the 2nd (second hand) handbrake I’ve brought is faulty.
I’ve had enough of the electric handbrake all together to be honest. Is there a way to convert it to a manual one?
I know the centre console is slightly different but these can be picked up pretty easily off donor cars. I’m
Assuming all bolt holes will be there? Does anyone have a diagram for how the handbrake works on the manual handbrake version ?

Hello All,
I am experiencing a similar issue with a 2012 508 allure , problems are started after the battery was replaced, took car to dealers to get bsi downloaded he said it doesn't need to be done..came back with comms faults..I'm no expert but I work with automated machinery ,everyone I get comms faults it's always cables, switches etc. Quoted 1500 euro for part alone .needless to say need a second opinion..

Hi All, apologies for typos,am I correct in assuming the 7092 control module located at the switch inside drop down panel near steering wheel?
I am also getting intermittent wipers remaining on even when car is locked, also esp faults .
Are these events somehow related?
I had a look at the cabling at the engine bay fuse box all looks ok .

I think wiper/lights faults are usually related to comm 2000 unit (or whatever it’s called?) the thing that sits behind the steering wheel with wipes and light stalks attached

7092 is the actual handbrake control switch used to manually apply and release it, located to the left of the steering wheel on the dashboard fascia.
