A nice viaduct seen from the Tesco car park in Chester Le Street.

Tesco Chester-le-Street possibly the only Tesco in the Country with a viaduct in the car park. Unless anyone knows differently.

Morrisons do have one with a lighthouse at Preston

But that's just a publicity thing, Tesco's viaduct is a real one, with real trains!

It is though like the American tourist asked - Why was Windsor castle built so close to Heathrow airport.

I know Stockport has a Viaduct and I have been to Tesco Extra at Stockport right in the town behind something, so I wondered how close they were. Not close enough to take Chester-le-Street's title, but at the bottom of the page was a link to the biggest brick built viaduct in the World. Not sure if there is a Lidl and Aldi at either end, but worth a POTD nontheless.

The Chester le Street one can't compete with that, Tesco or no Tesco.

Zurich has a Markthalle inbetween a couple of its viaducts.

I do like a bit of architect speak...

"The Viaduct is more than just a bridge. Like a mountain chain erected by human hand it appears in the town with a scale derived from the landscape and topography"

There is a similar feature in Glasgow but I could only find this picture borrowed from Alamy of it:

Cant be 100% sure but that looks like it is Chester le street Mick, and the caption is wrong.

I think I can see Lumley Castle in the background, which you see as the back drop to the Durham County CC ground at the Riverside, and the road layout/ the store/and the spiky church all fit with Chester-le-Street

Regards Neil

Definitely Chester-le-Street Wiki has same pic

Definitely Chester le Street.

There is another one near me. We used to spend a lot of time in the riverside park that runs along the banks of the Wear and up to it.

A long time ago now but my next door neighbour went out with his son in his pushchair, collected his dole money, did the weeks shopping, came home and put the shopping away then went out alone.

And threw himself off the viaduct.

Has anyone heard of the Kings Cross Triplets?

Remember when Loft Apartments were de rigueur. Are Gasometer Apartments the next big thing :?:

There's one in east Anglia, Norfolk I think, that has a wind turbine in the car park.

Kind of ironic - I was in Tesco's car park but didn't go to Tesco.
I went to Vision Express, halfway up the main street. Broke my glasses yesterday. They were crap anyway and have been Dremmelled and Gorilla glued repeatedly. Bought new ones.

Tesco own Vision Express :)

SPAR, in the UK I think of corner shops, few filling stations and mini markets, the odd one or two larger outlets, but a bit bigger in Austria.

This in Graz is particularly noteworthy as it produces by design more energy than it uses.
