Dispatch clutch noise

Post by moizeau »

Afternoon, today I have been greeting by a squeal when I press the clutch peddle in. 2010 1.6 16v 90 hdi. I suppose this is a bearing? Also a slight 'flutter' can be felt by your foot when the pedal is pressed a couple of mm's.
I take this is gearbox out or at least rested to one side? I'm also guessing that if can continue to drive it the bearing could break up completely and write off the van?
Is this a doable job on the drive with the van lifted up a tad?
Cheers
Pete

I'm not familiar with that particular gearbox, but normally there is a clutch release bearing that pushes the cluth fingers in whilst it rotates. And yes it sounds like that is probably knackered, and yes you'll have to split the gearbox off the engine to change it. Yes it's doable on the drive, but it's a quite a big job. Given the way the engine is halfway under the dash it may be easier to give in and remove the front bumper/lights radiator at which point you get really good access. I know this sounds like a lot of work but it all comes off surprisingly easily at least on the MK1 frontend. You've got the MKII but I presume it's put together the same way. This is how I did it the one time I needed to take the engine right out for major work. With the front off and the driveshafts out you can just roll the whole engine forward on a jack to get plenty of space to work. I guess there is enough room to drop the engine a little and pull the gearbox off in situ to get at the clutch+release bearing, but it'll be annoying and you need to take care to pull it out square so as not to bend the gearbox shaft.

If the release bearing collapses completely it won't write off the van - you just won't be able to use the clutch, so can only change gear when the engine is stopped, or with judicious revving (and you won't be able to start the car again unless rolling down a hill) - i.e the vehicle is pretty-much useless until you fix it.

Thanks very much for the reply. I've had the bumper and lights out before (to change the lights) so that's not daunting. Just never done a clutch on a car before. I shall have a word with a mate who's got a farm and see if I can use a spare barn, with various ramps etc. should be able to get it a bit higher as well.
Thanks again
Pete

Release bearing is made of chocolate and blu tac, and is the usual failure on these - that's how the one in our last Picasso went. Once out the clutch plate was only half worn but the release bearing came out in a bag of bits,
