C5 MK I towbar wiring

Hello all,

I have what seems to be dealer fitted (Australia) European spec towbar.

I cannot find any wiring plug for the towbar at all.

Just wondering whether this model came with a plug from the factory somewhere on the loom?

Any advice on wiring up one of these otherwise?

Just use an ordinary standard bypass relay kit to wire the towbar socket.

Can I throw a cat amongst the pigeons by saying that my Mk1 C5 had the wires connected directly (not by me, a previous owner) into the wiring loom! No faults ever flagged up and the only disadvantage was the lack of a (legally required!) warning when a trailer board was connected.

You may find that as the electric kits for the towbar can be quite expensive, it may of been removed prior to your ownership. The official kits generally come with the trailer relay fuse unit too. When I bought my C5 it had a towbar - which the dealer removed for me and the wiring kit was nowhere to be seen - so suspect that was also removed.

Direct wiring works fine on the mk1. The lights are all switched by relays which are well up to the job on those anyway. I have done it and tested it for 16 years without a problem.
However using the bypass kit prevents faulty trailer wiring from causing problems on the car itself.
