C5 Tourer steering rack oil leak.

Post by Jetjockey »

Hello.

I’ve just a very quick enquiry, and it’s regarding the well known leak from the C5 steering rack input shaft, the one where the seal gets worn away due to corrosion of the input shaft.

I’m just wondering if this was ever addressed / cured by Citroén in the later C5 models? I’m specifically thinking 2014/2015 models of the exclusive tourer estate.

Thanks in advance. :-D

Erm, not really. The main problem (less than optimal quality of steel) was never addressed. Some companies who refurbish leaking racks chrome plate the pinion.

No it was not. Given that the racks were the same fitment for the later models as the earlier ones, the only 'update' they provided a pathetic green plastic ring like off a Fairy Liquid Washing up bottle that sat at the bottom of the pinion shaft to try and prevent water sitting in the recess. Ask me how I know. I had an original brand new updated rack fitted by Citroen under warranty and it failed again in 20k miles - rusted to hell.

The second time I went for a refurbished and treated rack that was coated and undertook the boot mod as recommended on several large threads on this Forum, without further incident.

That’s a terrible shame.

I was considering buying another C5 estate, a 2014 model, but I think I’ll pass. Shame, they are a lovely car.

You could always look for a decent facelift C5 estate. THEY have a steering rack which is made using a decent quality steel. :D

Hello again.

C5 estate facelift? What’s one of those? I thought they hadn’t fixed this problem on the C5?

Thanks.

The Facelift C5 is really the C5 Mk1, and before the C5 X7. The problem with the steering rack was introduced with the C5 X7. (In sequence you have the C5 Mk, the C5 Facelift, and the C5 X7).

The following is an example of a C5 Facelift;

I have a C5 Facelift VTX+ 2.2HDi with (when she was new) 173HP, and she is fast and comfortable (and NO, you cannot have her!). The suspension has a Sport button, just to make her more interesting!
