rear picasso suspension

i have noticed the distance from top of tyre to rear wheel arch is zero....front is about 200mm ?
a friend says torsion bars bent from too much load at some point....
if i raise the rear and ratchet strap wheels together would that bend torsion bars back the other way ??
as i hear they are a ball ache job to replace
or could i add suspension springs between stops say from a juke
