If you must do it, original colour will save a lot of faff around door shuts and other returns and awkward bits - unless you're going for a complete strip down first

Re: Spraying a car for newbies.
My view is if you want to change the colour, change the car. Applying a colour change involves 7 or 8 times the work in preparation and will result in people asking why was the colour changed when its sale time, or in other words devalues it. Originality preserves value so unless you are expecting to scrap it down the line, in which case you can get away with a job that satisfies you, keep it original and use the time to prepare the panels to the highest standard you can. As for spraying, you need a dust free and wind free environment at the very least and some old sheet metal to practise spray patterns and arm swings with. Nowadays I'd go for doing all the prep yourself and getting the painting done professionally in a proper environmentally friendly spray shop.

A tin of Valspar and a paint roller is all that's needed.

I painted my Mk6 Reliant with a tin of Lilac Magicote and a 2" brush. She loved it for the wedding!!

I did a Burgess air-less respray (Aaaargh!) of a friend's Minivan back in 1970.
Original colour was a pale green, and he wanted it done in Hammerite Bronze, and so it was.
Defo a 'utility' job.

I did the 1928 Rolls Royce with Tekaloid brush paint, it hardened like cellulose so you could cut and polish the finish.
