Citroen DS3 (2013) Electrical fault (Eng light, Service light, no power)

Post by KWeb »

I am the owner of a 2013 Citroen 1.2 DS3. I have been experiencing an electrical fault with the vehicle over the last 5 months. The car’s service light and engine light come on and the car loses all power. The car fan blows for about 4 minutes after the car has been turned off. The car has shown several diagnostic error’s which we have tried to fix in hope of solving the persistent intermittent problem. The break light switch was changed. The throttle body was replaced (secondhand part). The car battery was replaced. The accelerated pedal was checked, and ECU was finally replaced (secondhand part). Unfortunately, all attempts to fix the car has failed. The car will run fine for up to 10 days and then cut out with the error described above. The intermittent nature of the fault is making it very difficult to pinpoint the problem and losing all power when driving has been very dangerous. I have relied on resetting the ECU by turning disconnecting /reconnecting the battery.

You didn't mention the fault code. Have you diagnosed it with a Lexia kit & Diagbox - which is really needed to find out what is going on. If you have the fault codes, then post them up, as replacing parts without a definitive issue is not really going to solve it.

Ok, and your VIN please (auto masked on submission) so I can relate these to the correct engine ECU.

I think you've missed some of the Code prefixes off, but these are powertrain codes so should have a 'P'. These are specific to your engine ECU to help you fault find. The last one I can't help you with as it's incomplete.
Fault Code: P0223
Description of Fault: Accelerator pedal position sensor signal: Short-circuit to positive 5V or open circuit on track 1. The pedal position issued from the sensor 1 is higher than a threshold.
Conditions for Fault to clear: At least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled:
- With the engine running
- After switching the ignition off and then back on: When the ECU goes to sleep
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Activation of the fan assemblies
  • Deactivation of the vehicle speed limiter
  • Torque limitation
  • Deactivating the cruise control
  • Natural opening position of the motorised throttle housing
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Growling/whirring/booming
  • The cruise control and speed limiter do not work
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness between the following two components
    - Engine ECU
    - Foot throttle pedal
  • Accelerator pedal sensor
  • Speed limiter point of resistance switch
Fault Code: P0228
Description of Fault: Accelerator pedal position sensor signal: Short-circuit to positive 5V or open circuit on track 2. The pedal position issued from the sensor 1 is higher than a threshold.
Conditions for Fault to clear: At least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled:
- With the engine running
- After switching the ignition off and then back on: When the ECU goes to sleep.
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Activation of the fan assemblies
  • Deactivation of the vehicle speed limiter
  • Torque limitation
  • Deactivating the cruise control
  • Natural opening position of the motorised throttle housing
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Growling/whirring/booming
  • The cruise control and speed limiter do not work
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness between the following two components
    - Engine ECU
    - Foot throttle pedal
  • Speed limiter point of resistance switch
Fault Code: P2133
Description of Fault: Accelerator pedal point of resistance switch signal fault: Short-circuit to the battery plus. The analogue measurement of the channel leading to the vehicle speed limiter point of resistance is greater than a threshold.
Conditions for Fault to clear: At least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled:
- With the engine running
- After switching the ignition off and then back on: When the ECU goes to sleep.
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: Deactivation of the vehicle speed limiter
Symptoms: Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Accelerator pedal sensor
Fault Code: P2137
Description of Fault: Motorised throttle position sensor signal: Lack of coherence between the 2 signals. The difference between the track 1 position and the track 2 position is greater than a threshold.
Conditions for Fault to clear: At least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled:
- With the engine running
- After switching the ignition off and then back on: When the ECU goes to sleep.
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Activation of the fan assemblies
  • Deactivation of the vehicle cruise control and speed limiter
  • Natural opening position of the motorised throttle housing
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine
  • Banging/knocking/creaking
  • The cruise control and speed limiter do not work
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness between the following two components:
    - Engine ECU
    - Accelerator pedal sensor
  • Accelerator pedal sensor
