Is there a definitive service manual for Xantia?

Post by Rhothgar »

Hi Guys,

I've noticed that my BoL is 1993-1998 and that they also do a version which covers 1993-2001.

I have what I believe to be a good proportion of the Citroen Factory Manuals but they are buried at the moment and not easily accessible. Probably half a day's work to extract them and they still might not have what I am looking for.

Does anyone know if there is some other definitive servicing guide which shows things like how to remove bumpers, intercooler and all the little niggly jobs that would make servicing so much easier if only you could get better access. EGR is another job I want to do but it looks hellish. The Citroem Mechanics Handbook has some great information. All those pages but not everything is covered. Seems a bit odd.

I'd rather not waste £10 on a 2nd hand BoL which covers Xantia X2. I'm guessing that there is in fact nothing else out there.

Would it be of use if I was to document certain procedures as I do them and create a library of jobs (even down to simple tasks like taking a door card off)? I'm thinking probably not as everyone's focus now seems to be C5 X7 (a car I would love but read too many horror stories about steering racks...)

Thanks in advance.

Be aware that Haynes did some cutting and pasting from the X1 to the X2 Xantia books, and these are not always accurate. For example, the BoL says that to remove the instrument panel you need to remove the steering wheel (in both books). While this is true for the X1, it is not the case for the X2 (you can guess how I learnt this).

Cheers Marc. I am already aware of those. They don't contain more general information I am looking for.

Luckily, I think I called on your experience the other week on that point. Just got to put it all back together now and now I've seen a nice HDi for sale on Ebay which is clearly in much better condition than mine but I sit here cogitating whether it would be worth the risk of jumping ship and end up with a car where the clutch will fail again at some point in the near future...

I think his reserve will be silly because he says his bill in December was £700. You generally find people, rightly so in some cases, want to try and recoup as much of their outlay as possible. Just strange why you would sell after spending so much money. I note from the photos that the NTC resistor in the mirror is on its way out...

Don't think you will find better source, than the Haynes Manual ("BoL"), when it comes to the overhaul of small and fiddly jobs like doors, lights, accessories and etc.
But as whole, you don't need anything, most of the repairs are self-explanatory, and even a reengineering is well possible for some parts.
The most troublesome, for me by far, is the hydraulic system and its correct operation. You probably saw MatPL's docs on the matter?

I never thought I'd see the day when the BoL was advocated as the best source.

I was fearing this would be the case. One day when I unearth all the factory manuals again I'll have to have a sift through and see how in-depth it is. The problem with them is they all consist of mini-volumes for which I have no overall index so some of mine are for X1 and some for X2. I do keep not a particularly active eye on Ebay for ones I don't have but then again I have no list of what I do have. That's another job at some point.

I'm sorry but I haven't seen MatPL's thread on hydraulics. I'll have to have a search for them. Thanks for the heads up. Normally straight forward to strip height correctors but if you have an Activa that's an whole different kettle of fish...

You may want to take a look at Revue Technique - they produce a lot of manuals - but all in French. They have a choice for the Xantia, depending on what you need. Some are PDFs and some are online accessible. I'm not sure whether you can get these translated using a third part utility, but I thought it worth a mention.

I've linked to a series II 110, but they have lots of models.

There's also a manual for the Xantia by Peter Russek.
In English, a few copies on the web, and you might find a pdf of it somewhere online to download and print.

I would say the Revue Technique Xantia one is better than BOL. I had both and found the info etc in Revue was better by far even although it was in French.

Before anyone thinks otherwise, this is my personal opinion.

I would agree Kenny, I don't have a physical copy but I do still have a PDF of it somewhere...

Got one! And one for the XM...

Both mine are for the early S1 models... They're good...

It goes without saying the best source of information is this very forum... Better than any manual as so much hard-won information is here, stuff you will never find in any manual...

They look very detailed.

27 years ago, it would have been easy for me to translate them although I would have struggled with technical terms.

Nowadays, I've forgotten all the French I know (with good reason...)

Surprised I even like the cars!

I agree but you can't constantly badger people which is what I seem to be doing at the moment. Be nice to have a physical reference. Be interested to see this PDF of RTA if you can find one Jim then I can decide.

Roger you are doing what everyone does, the same thing that makes this Forum the go to place, asking questions and posting your experiences.
Jim is correct, most of the knowledge we are all looking for is in the brains of Forum members, and posted in here for posterity. :)
If asking too many questions was a problem then i would have been banned years ago :rofl2:
