Anyone had a Subaru Legacy 2.5i?

Post by mickthemaverick »

Just a quick cheeky check, or rather brain pick. Has anyone had any experience of a Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2004? I have a chance to buy a rather nice one to replace the C5 but as I have never sat in one let alone driven one I wondered if anyone could shed any light on them? :)

Can't help with that Mick, my daughter ran a Forester in the States and loved it, said it would plough on through the snow a foot deep when all the local 4x4s were bogged down.
A video or two here. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=S ... &FORM=VIRE

I don't know if it applies to that particular engine but they did have a reputation for blowing head gaskets for fun.

Very thirsty beasts Subarus! If you do a lot of driving on mud and snow the fuel bills might be justified, but I think that you would be horrified after the C5 HDi. Also their seats are not comfortable (although I'm sure there are exceptions).

They sell well in Australia - I've owned a couple (although nothing as modern as a 2004 model). Also my sons have a couple between them. They like them, but parts can be very expensive!

Thanks for that, I have decided that due to my mileage dropping from around 20k a year to less than 6k I can put up with the fuel costs but I am a bit concerned about the comfort side. Oddly the insurance is £200 less than the C5 which I really don't get but I'm not complaining. Hopefully I might get a chance to test drive it this week and see how it feels. The truth is I'd rather keep the C5 anyday but it has begun to have a new problem every week so it is only a matter of time before one of them becomes expensive. With the ongoing screen issue, I have now been through 4 replacement ECUs, and the anti-roll bar knocking re emerged, the MOT is due at the end of this month and I have been offered £200 more than I paid for it, so it seems a no brainer to bite the bullet and let it go. Hence the possible Subaru! I also have my eye on a couple of Mazda 6's, a Honda Accord and a Nissan Primera T-Spec with only 23k miles on the clock. As I can only be comfortable in an auto these days, there are not too many options given that I don't like the styling of the X7 and anything newer would be out of budget. Open to any ideas that anyone can offer along similar lines to those I've mentioned and given my dislike of Germanic harshness and Vauxhalls for no justifiable reason but I will never buy one again!! As for Fords, I've loved them since my RS2000 days but I've had 3 Mondeo's and a Granada so been there, done that!! :? :)

Have you looked at Infiniti's Mick.
One of my daughter's neighbours has a Q50. Nice looking and the bloke loves it, says it is very comfortable.

I hadn't Steve so I just did and there is not a single car on Ebay. Autotrader or Motors within my budget so that is a non starter at the moment. Nice idea tho! :)

Mazdas are generally great reliable cars but If your thinking of the Mazda 6 dont go near a diesel model that has a DPF (same with any Mazda diesels). They suffer from DPF faults galore, oil dilution etc.

Almost bought a Mazda 6 but the Civic came up closer to home. Not sure I made the best choice.

Yes thanks Wheeler. I had one Mazda 6 which was great and only left when my current C5 became available. Ironically I made that change to get the C5 suspension and satnav! As for diesel that is one decision I have made, whatever car I get it will not be a diesel as my first step to purifying my motoring!! :-D

Having seen your Civic Steve, it is a nice looking car but as for general usage I think you may be right to doubt your choice. :)

Thanks for the effort Neil, if I were replacing the MX3 that could be a candidate except for the silver colour which I try to avoid! But I need 4 doors and decent load space for my daily car so a non starter to replace the C5 I'm afraid! :)
