Berlingo 2.0 hdi turns but doesn’t start u1003

Post by Runningman »

Also posted on berlingo forum.

My car turns but doesn’t start & I initially cam here to find someone with a diagbox (edhertz in Colchester) but I can’t contact maybe because my account is new...

Background.
The car / van was working, left it on the drive for few days, and now it doesn’t start.
It had a new battery in November as the old one was shot and since then had been starting well.
It has the “Siemens rough running feature” and can Chuck itself into limp mode with the following code p1351. This usually happens if you try to pull away with no throttle.
Other than that it’s been fine and passed it’s mot last month.

It’s airbag lights x2 came on shortly after mot and the usual clean of contacts under seats doesn’t resolve.

Issue.
It turns well but doesn’t start. The following codes come up on my Bluetooth scanner u1003, p1351 and I can’t clear them.

I’ve removed the ecu connections and they look good and clean so put them back. I’ve owned the car since nearly new and unlike the post above no one to my knowledge has messed with it.

Checked all fuses relating to ecu or vancom according to the manual, all fine.

Help please

Hi.

I am going to make some broad assumptions here in that you have an HDi with the Bosch EDI15C2 ECU and that the wiring layout and fuse boxes are the same as a 2000 Xantia HDi.

Shame you cannot access a Lexia. P1351 is not listed as a known fault code within the Factory Diagnosis Manual. However, doing a search of P1351 Fault Code on the internet brings you right back to the forum and a post by the eminent CitroJim. His comments there point to glowplug relay. Now! Given the code temperatures this is a distinct possibility.

However, I have read also that it could be crank position sensor. Having limited access to proper diagnostic tools such as an oscilloscope can make accurate diagnostic a little tricky.

If you unplug the air mass meter plug and lift the airbox out of the way (assuming the layout is the same as my HDi Xantia) then there is a brown 3 pin plug under there which leads to the camshaft sensor on the gearbox. Very difficult to remove. However, using a DMM I would check the Ohms on that to make sure it's within tolerance.

But before that, let's assume you have fuel in the vehicle and it is the correct type, I would:-

1) Press the inertia switch on the bulkhead (unlikely to have tripped but...)
2) Check Fuses F2 and F4 in the Engine Compartment fusebox. Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key in the ignition? If not, thump hard on the underside of the tank.
3) Are there any visual leaks?
4) Is air inlet or filter blocked?
5) Is battery fully charged? I see it's new but worth checking.
6) Check for voltage at Fuses F2 and F4 in Engine Bay and (with Ignition On) F2 in the Passenger Compartment

At this point, it starts to get a little more complicated.

Be good to know year of vehicle and hopefully someone may have the wiring diagrams for your exact model.

Anyway, some good basic checks to get you started.

The OP says it has the “Siemens rough running feature” so im guessing is a siemens SID802 system meaning no in tank pump & unless its a mk1 wont have an inertia switch either.
The first basic checks for this engine are getting it on decent diagnostics & checking:-
Can you see engine RMP?
Do you have cam & crank synchronisation?
Do you have over 100 bar of fuel pressure on cranking?

I have no knowledge of this Siemens devilry. I just see HDi and think I can help. Perhaps I'll stick to giving and receiving Xantia advice. I hope some of my points were pertinent...

Thanks for the replies, yes Siemens 801a in a 2005 2.0hdi 215k miles.
Mechanically I believe the engine to be sound(ish) as it “runs” with easy start into air intake.

From memory as I’ve not been able to look at the vehicle for a week...

Yes I’ve got over 100 bar fuel pressure on cranking
Yes Cam & crank
Sorry what’s engine rmp?

I’ve managed to get wiring info and know the pins on ecu that coms to the bsi relate to. I was planning to test that pair of wires next but other than that I’m stuck.

Sorry thats a typo, meant to be engine RPM or engine speed.
So the engine will run on easy start but stops as soon as you stop spraying it?

Yes.
So mechanically ok you’d think?

It seems you have the ability to check certain things.

If you have an oscilloscope, you should scope the Fuel Pressure Regulator and ensure it has a square waveform as it cycles on and off.

Here is what good and bad cam and crankshaft waveforms look like:-

viewtopic.php?p=661633&hilit=P0340#p661633

You need over 100 bar to crank but you will need 300 bar differential for it to run. Problem is when you have a fault like this, your battery quickly dies constantly cranking over unless it's new and even then. It gets some stick without being replenished. Ideally you want at least 200rpm cranking speed.

Worth checking output of fuel pressure sensor too because that feeds the signals to the ECU which tells the ECU there is enough fuel pressure to fire.

Let me know if the waveforms for FPR and FPS would be of any use to you and I'll try and dig them out.
