I find myself strangely attracted to a black Citroen C4 1.6 HDi. Are they just a 307/308 or do the have odd expensive problems?

Engines and platforms are shared across the marques, as well as other parts and equipment, but the designs are of course individual. The C4 was built on the Regular PF2 platform and it shared this with the 308, 3008, DS4, C4 MK II and RCZ.
There's nothing overtly technical that you wouldn't find on any other PSA cars of the age.
