Oh woe is me! Xantia door lock. Can’t get in!

Post by Rhothgar »

Well. I’ve been meaning to post for over two weeks but have just been too busy and not needed my car.

When it was really cold, I started to struggle to get into the S1 Xant.

I used a bit of WD40 to see if lubricating the lock would help. Of course, you should use graphite powder and I have been meaning to buy some. It’s just so expensive if it doesn’t now work.

So the doors are deadlocked. I can get into the rear because that’s disconnected but obviously nothing actuated the lock.

I am going to hit it with a 12mm diameter drill bit if no-one has any better suggestions.

Question is if I even do that, will I be able to get in? Probably have to destroy the handle totally!

It is not clear from your description whether it is just one door that has a problem with the electric deadlocking?

Sorry. It’s the driver’s door. The key goes in all the way but it will not rotate. It’s as though the pins are stuck.

The passenger door lock just rotates 360 degrees so key does nothing in there either.

Literally the car is completely deadlocked and I cannot get in.

Any chance you can get in through the boot Roger?
If so you may be able to open it from inside. Even if only the back doors at first.

Do you have AA/RAC etc cover?
I am 99% sure there are ways to get into a deadlocked car without actually breaking parts that us mere mortals are not totally clued up on.
Just for clarity you have posted the car is totally deadlocked and cannot get in but also posted that you can get in via the rear door.
Been a long day so just trying to get my head around the issue

Sorry guys perhaps I should have been my usual verbose self. I did posts from my phone so kept them short.

Title is perhaps misleading.

Yes I can get into the car via the rear door which is not secure because of the issue I had with the central locking (obviously still not solved) but pulling the handle or actuating the door button will not open any doors so that's why I say I cannot get it.

So once in, is there anything I can do to get the front doors unlocked? I thought about open the doors and disconnecting the battery and reconnecting but I'm pretty sure that isn't going to do anything because they are deadlocked.

I suppose I will actually open the bonnet and try that today. I do have the deadlocking principle manual so I suppose the only way this is going to be resolved without causing any damage is by me applying power to the relevant cable somewhere in the engine bay. Once I've done that, I then have car that is unlocked and cannot be locked!

I suppose I can also try the key in the ignition to see if the car will start because I wonder if the key has worn past a limit of usability. If that's the case, how do I get a new key supplied? Obviously Citroen only I imagine as I only have one key.

One way or another, you need to get the locks out of deadlock mode, which requires either getting the key to work, or taking off the door card and maniplating the rod from the outside handle, or destroying the outside handle to get at the rod, or get the deadlock to unlock electrically.

Being an S1, the locking module should be under the centre console

The lock wiring for your car should be something similar to this:

Thanks for those. Saves me digging my manuals out. Had a scour around for my factory deadlocking Deadlocking Principle manual and cannot find it although I have found Diagnosis Body Computer for Coded Anti-Theft Device from Dec 1997 onwards which is obviously a few years younger and I am thinking it must be the switch from S1 to S2 models. RP 7668 On.

As it is the rear LH door is already stripped out because I never bothered finishing getting to the bottom of that lock problem hence why I can get in. Thankfully I'd left it unlocked. So I can get to the wires on that mechanism.

Fault Code 13 (presumably on an Elit) is "deadlocking not possible rear LH door open" which is making me wonder if I can force an unlock by taking battery voltage to one of the pins.

So I've drawn a blank on that at present. I'll study the wiring diagrams.

OK. Managed to get in by hot-wiring the rear door lock. It didn’t actually actuate the unlocking but I am guessing it just sent the relevant voltage to the door locking CPU and when I tried the button internally they then all worked.

So now I have an unlocked car!

Next issue. Sort the lock somehow. The ignition works so would I be right in saying that that rules out a worn key?

I don’t know which combination of wire touches caused the unlock as I tried all the pins and got sparks off every pin...

I had expected to hear the other motors unlock when applying voltage but it didn’t happen like that.

What is the price for a complete new lock set and keys? I might just be tempted. Until I know the price that is!!

A part code would be really appreciated to see if I can source elsewhere.

Hi All,

Got the barrel out. Stripped the internal door trim out and then found out I didn't need to.

I never reference the BoL because it is usually not worthy but in this case it was (if I'd have actually read it before I would have learnt how to remove a door lock barrel and it didn't involve stripping the trim out).

I've seen one other post with a lock stripped out and it talks of nipping some tabs up with a pair of pliers.

However, mine doesn't seem to have the tabs so I need to start dismantling it to see if they are inside somewhere. Let's hope it goes back together OK. :?

Once the barrel is out you need to strip it down further to get to the core & you will see the tabs you need to squeeze. They splay out over time & it lets the key go in too far, its a really unusual lock design, once the pins are alinged the lock barrel actually moves further back one click too so the mechanism can engage.
I have some pics i can add once i get home. This will only likley work on the barrel thats just spinning. The one thats not moving at all may be siezed.

If they are the photos I’ve already seen on the forum then no need.

I’ll already stripped it, broken one of the tabs, and lost a 3mm. ball bearing which sits in the indent and prevents the lock turning when the key is out.

I’m going to see if I can get it working with a 1/8” ball bearing tomorrow, clean the internals properly with a brush on a dremel as it looks quite oxidised inside.

I’ll be buying some graphite powder tomorrow if all goes well and restrip and lubricate it. May just use normal grease now. Chances are it will last long enough.

@Wheeler

The topic where you posted your photos originally is here:-

viewtopic.php?hilit=door lock barrel&p=613578

When the key is inserted into my barrel, the square keyway 'lugs' that protude out either side of the nibs do not protrude out as much.

I actually have a spare door I can strip a lock out of but have you tried and managed to strip the lock down any further? If I could strip it fully, I would be able to use the same key without another barrel.

For example, does anyone know who the OEM was on these locks?

Ahh, i forgot i posted those. The lock im holding in the pics is actually blank, there are no pins in it so any key will operate it, thats as far down as you need to strip it if you want to re key it.
There are 2 little covers on it that can be unclipped to reveal the pins, once the cover is off there is a tiny spring in each hole then the pin underneath, there are 5 pins in the top row & 4 in the side cut row. you can then swap the pins into a different lock barrel.
Citroen used to sell the locks blank & you could assemble them to fit your key, now the only sell them either ordered to your key number (which can take a while) or ordered with a random key.
I believe the OEM was Valeo/Simplex.

Cool. Cheers.

I've found my way into it. Just hope I don't mess it up. Plenty of photos I guess.

Fully clean with IPA and rebuild and inject graphite powder I suppose. There appears to be some oxidisation in the outer barrel which must possibly restricting rotation.

Hopefully, I can't go too far wrong.

Thanks for your advice and that of others.
