2001 Citroen C5 3.0 V6 4HP20 Gearbox

Hi there .i have a Citroen c5 v6 2007 model exclusive .car has 159000km on clock .trouble ive been having is when i start the car and engage it in drive or reverse it moves but after few minitues the gearbox (al4 )goes dead with no warning if i switch it off wait a few seconds and start the vehicle again it drives few miniutes then goes dead again and this just happens continuos.ive asked around changed the oil three times already just does the same thing any advice will be highly appreciated .tia

If your car is a V6, and has a 4 speed transmission, it is probably a 4HP20 transmission. I believe that the AL4 was only used with 4 cylinder engines.

The 4HP20 often (eventually always) fails due to a blocked oil filter which starves the transmission of hydraulic pressure and often leads to dramatic downstream failures.

The filter cannot be serviced without opening the transmission, which usually requires removal of the engine.

If you post your VIN, we can at least confirm which transmission you have.

A Citroen C5 MK II of this year and with an ES9A engine will have the AM6 gearbox. So either you don't have a V6 (there were other petrol engines) or you do have a V6 in which case the gearbox is an AM6. Your VIN will confirm this.

Mystery solved - you don't have a 2007 MK II C5.

You have a MK I C5 that was built in November 2001! So I suspect this may have something to do with exporting the car to where you are and the date is was registered in your location.

So for the year, this vehicle has a BVA4 HP20 (AG) gearbox. The engine is a ES9J4S and it's a 3.0 V6 24V 210.

So Xantia_V6's advice remains the same now we've established the details. If you have access to a Lexia diagnostic kit, you should get some fault codes. Are you getting any warnings / flashes on the instrument panel?

Hi yes thank you for that sorry for the wrong im still learning about this vehicle.i am in s.a kwazulu natal .in a nutshell car was given to me so im trying to sort it out and use it to try to earn a living . Theres no flashing lights just service light is on

Also these old citreons are not very common here cause its costly to maintain and spares are hard to come by.

Could you perhaps also change AL4 to 4HP20 in the title? It grates every time I see it, because I know that AL4 & V6 don't go together...
