Citroen C5 diesel 2006 1.6cc Changing/Replacing a suspension ball joint front right

Post by FIRSTCITREON »

Please can the members help me hopefully? Wanting to buy my friend's car which is a Citroen C5, year 2006, 1.6cc diesel (6 on the carte grise (log book) or 1100 cheveaux) - She just had it CT'd (like an MOT) and it has failed on the suspension ball joint front right ('rotule de suspension' in French). So that needs changing. My partner wants to do it himself but could anyone tell me or direct me to videos showing how it is done please? Will car tyres wear unevenly due to this ball joint needing changing? All help massively appreciated. Due to problems with our other vehicles we are currently car less in the middle of the French countryside - hence need to do this quickly otherwise we may starve to death as supermarkets many kms away. :-D Many thanks to everyone

Hi, and :welc: to the Forum. While I cannot offer any help, if you wait a while somebody with knowledge/experience will be along to let you know how to do that.

Thank you for the welcome Hell razor 5543 and for the links and video mickthemaverick. I did see both of these today (auto doc and the video). Auto doc says ''we don't have this tutorial' and the video yes I had seen. Cannot find a workshop manual for 2006. Anyone know why not? So will a manual for 2004 or 03 be alright do you think? Approximately how long to do this job for a garage? So double or treble that for me? Special tools needed I think which are nearly 50 euros each in France.

I have the C5 Haynes manual which covers 2001-2008. In the balljoint section it does not differentiate between the years, thereby suggesting it is the same across those years
However I am talking about a Haynes manual and we do know they are not always to be believed. It certainly says that citroen tool 7103-T will be required to remove the joint. Having never done mine I cannot comment but the tool would appear to be a special spanner with lugs that fit into the ball joints steel ring. If you would like to find the downloadable manual from the forum you will need access to the members area which is gained by a bi-annual contribution of your choice but a minimum of £10. Well worth it because it will allow you access to all sorts of information concerning parts and workshop info. Hopefully one of the admin staff will be able to advise you further. Good luck

AFAIK Mk1 and Mk2 C5s use the same suspension and you do need the special pronged tool to remove the ball joint. The special tool I bought (to do my Mk1) required the 35mm socket that you use on the drive shaft nut and then an extremely long breaker bar on that.

It's been a long time now but I remember it was a real PITA to remove. ISTR that when I applied real force to the breaker bar that the inner bushes just absorbed most of the effort by flexing a little. I did get it done in the end but I think I had to take the complete arm off and heat may have played a part as well.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

I'm sure you are correct Paul, the bottom joint is not the one Mick pictured, I've done them on several C5s including my current 06 one, they require the special tool and as you say they can be hellish tight. I have the tool in my box and a home made one that I used earlier.

The one above is the Mk3 X7. The Mk1 / 2 car is like this:

Last one I did on a Xantia was ridiculously tight, and just laughed at the castellated socket. Had to weld a 41mm nut on it and apply a LOT of heat and a BIG bar to get it off!!!
