ECU interchangability...

Post by ekjdm14 »

Hi all, just wondering if one of the electronics gurus could help with a question that's arisen.

When replacing an ECU set it's usual to try and get the matching part number, but I believe that some differences are OK.

Is there any easy way to check if our ECU kit (complete with BSI/BSM and keys etc) with ECU p/n 9644157380 is a viable swap for a car with ECU p/n 9659341880 ?

I believe as long as they're both the Bosch ECU and the whole ECU/BSI/lock set is swapped in that it should work but just wanted to double check before committing. (if it's just coding differences I.E. climate vs aircon vs none then I can sort that on PP2000 but wanted to check that it will actually work with the car as a whole firstly)

Cheers, Dan

I tried a similar question but didn't get too far. No disrespect intended to anyone involved.

I bought a C2 furio "ECU kit" to go into a C3 SX. BUT the C2 was a manual and the C3 is an automatic.

After installing the kit the engine ran but would not talk to the auto box. I managed to get everything else working but the engine ECU is hard coded as a manual gearbox version only. Didn't expect that.

I believe the C2's BSI was a "ring-in" as it was an upmarket version and had been "fiddled with". Being a furio (theoretically) the BSI shouldn't have worked...fully...but it did. Even the rear child locks worked!!! C2 has no rear doors!!! The BSI had stickers all over it saying it was re-manufactured by some company!

This whole thing was an experiment and in some ways it was a success and in some ways a failure, but that's my problem.

OK, so whats my point? If you buy second hand parts they may not be what you expect (good or bad). The ECU's are literally covered in numbers...which ones are relevant to you, what's the number(s) you are looking for to make it compatible with your car? Some of the number will be production info and some will be serial numbers which are not relevant. The C2 engine ECU and the C3 engine ECU each had 4 sets of numbers, 1 set matched, but it didn't work.

If all of the numbers on all of the ECU's don't match up (with the ones in your car), the best advice I can give is; ensure the vehicle the kit came out of has all the same engine, gearbox, features and appointments as your car.

Given your VIN the guys here may be able to tell you what ECU part number(s) you should have in your car. But interchangeability?

The older PSA cars could of had one of 3 types of BSI fitted, depending on vehicle model, year and options fitted. These BSIs could also have different manufacturers and were different 'levels' depending on the equipment and option fitted to the vehicle. So it was important not only to have the correct BSI, but also the correct level, or certain functionality wouldn't be available.

I suspect if this is for a 206 that you will have a Valeo variant and the same BSI was used for all trim models.

What I need is the VIN for the car in question Dan as you have quite a few listed, then I can check the correct BSI part for the specific vehicle.

Thanks both. Marc, the car in question isn't ours but somebody in need of an ECU set for their car. I can ask for the chassis number but the info I have so far is our ECU is from a 2002 Style 1.4HDi manual (upgraded over the years with front fogs including compatible BSM, and electric windows activated in BSI but never installed.

His car is the '06 and is a Verve spec IIRC. In any case have agreed that if it doesn't help him out he can send it back, but will try and get VIN and confirmation one way or another before posting it.

Thanks Marc.

Ok, I will need the VIN of the car you want the correct part number for Dan, as that is the only way to guarantee the correct one.

no worries, have asked the fella & given him the option of sending me the VIN or joining here & posting it in this thread so you can see it.

Thanks again, appreciate the help.

By the way it's Bosch EDC16C3 ECU and the BSI/BSM are by Siemens

Right:

The Engine Fuse Box could of been fitted with either a Delphi or Siemens, but in either case any replacement is now a Delphi unit.

PSA part number was either 6500Y1 for for the Delphi (new and original part number) or 6500Y3 for the older Siemens that is no longer supplied.

There is a standard BSI Exchange part number: 1650882680 which is Continental

So using these part numbers, you can at least do a bit of searching to see what equivalent part numbers are listed against those Dan.

If you have a look at some of the pics for these items on the bay of evil, you can zoom onto the pictures with the bar codes / labels and often see the larger 96* or 98* number along with the PSA internal number, like this:

Brill thanks Marc. For what the shipping cost we've agreed that if it doesn't suit the car it'll be returned but I'm 97.863% sure it'll be fine.
