Best engine oil Xantia 1.9TD

Unread post by PicassoPigeon »

I need to change the oil in my xantia soon, i dont know what has been used in there before but what can i put in there when i change it i have looked on the andyspares site and they have total oil quartz 5000D for diesel is there a synthetic that i could use or semi. Would this be to much for my engine, would it cause leaks it has done 113,000 miles. sorry for the long post. thanks for any help.

We all have our favourites but any good semi-syn for diesels will do you.
I'm using Millers 10/40 XFE at present, about £11.50 for 5litres. This has an excellent reputation.
If you do an oil and filter change every 6K there will be no real advantage to fully syn.

Whatever oil you decide on (semi-syn seems a good choice, and anyway, oils are much better overall now than they were when your car was new), make sure you change the filter every time as well with a genuine one. Andyspares sell them for under £3 each, so even the're not literally as cheap as chips they ARE cheaper than fish and chips!
I used the Quartz fully synthetic in the wife's Vauxhall petrol car and it was very good indeed, so as a brand I'd say they are OK.

I think Millers very good but difficult to find round me. My wife's Xantia seemed to prefer semi synth - it smoked on starting with fully synth and as D. says - if you change oil every 5k no advantage, but more cost in fully synth. By the way - if you ever go on a booze cruise to France, stock up on engine oil - it's half price in their supermarkets compared to most outlets here(for Total, Elf etc, even cheaper for shops own brand which seems good quality as well).

I'm using the ordinary Total Q7000 from a/s at the moment in my '96 TDLX, which seems to be alright. IIRC this is B3 rated so is fine for putting in a diesel. I've also used the millers DJW quotes in the past which was also ok.
I did once put in fully synthetic 5W-40, many 000's of miles ago, and it lost alot more of that between changes, presumably burning it, rather than causing leaks (never found any drips etc.). With the current semi-syn it doesn't loose anything between 5k changes. It also quite liked Duckhams QXR, although this usually doesn't come as cheap!

Chris' post reminded me - QXR Diesel oil.
I bought 12 cans of the stuff a few weeks ago for £6.95, I assume mispriced as it's now gone up to £16.95.
I got two broom handles as well.
I must have looked a bit of a sight, buying 12 cans with six cans threaded on each broom stick.....
