Well for £12 it's not the end of the world. The worst case it that he tells you there's nothing wrong with it - in which case you know you've probably got a copy with the wrong frequency / circuitry.

As an update I phoned a dealer and they said they would give me the code for £24 if I went in with the log book. Seems expensive?.

That is expensive. I've had to ask a dealer to provide the 4 digit confidential code for two cars.
Both times they provided it free of charge. As you say, you just have to present yourself with the V5 in your name, to show the car is yours.

Well, yes it is. But mine charged £25 + VAT = £30! That was a couple of years ago as well.

Maybe if you have another dealer nearby you could ask them? Hell, if one would do it FOC that would make it worthwhile to travel for a couple of hours!

My local dealer provided mine free of charge, maybe worth trying another dealership if theres another not too far from you.

As for the key's, you said the ones you have both start the car so I think all you'll have to do is buy a replacement case from somewhere like eBay, swap your blade and circuit board into it and program the plip to lock and unlock the doors. From memory all you do is turn the ignition on and hold down the lock button for 10 seconds, wait for a while and then press the buttons on the fob to test and it should lock and unlock the car....................unless I'm missing something

In that case you will need to buy a key complete with a new circuit board and you will need the "Customer Confidential Code" from the dealer but once you have this the new key can be coded to the car easily with Diagbox/Lexia. I've just done my C4 Picasso and was very straightforward

An update on the situation.

My partner did the reset of the key as described earlier this afternoon. She informed me that since the reset the key now opens the door!, but when she presses the other button it won’t lock the door?. We are 50% there now do you think that the button on the lock panel is not functioning please?. With 50% of it working am I correct in thinking it should all work lock and open or nothing?.

I would say so, sounds like you have a dodgy microswitch.
