This has been driving me completely bananas in this cold weather. The manual for my C5 X7 has this:
Can you see that diesel preheater symbol? Where is this in the instrument binnacle? It doesn't appear! How do I know if the glowplugs have done their thing?!
Where is the preheater light on C5 X7 1.6Hdi?

The HDi engines are very efficient, and (assuming everything is working properly) start up very quickly. The glow plugs are hardly ever used, and (I suspect) in Porto the engine will never get cold enough for them to be used. On MY C5 the glow plug light is lit for a second at most, and during the summer it barely flickers on.

Hardly ever saw mine either, only in the coldest of weather. Never bothered to wait for it, just started the car like a petrol - and it did.Hell Razor5543 wrote: ↑16 Jan 2021, 18:40 The HDi engines are very efficient, and (assuming everything is working properly) start up very quickly. Rarely used on these engines - only for pre-heating in very cold weather and for DPF regeneration assistance (post heating) when necessary and determines by the engine ECU. Unlike the older diesels you will not have to wait until the pre-heat warning goes off as it is rarely used in starting. You'll be lucky to see it at all, but if you wait until the engine is cold, get in and keep you eye on the dash, then turn the ignition on, you may just get a glimpse of it.
So you can more or less forget about these as said - they are rarely needed.
