BSI problems I think?

Post by Greg2309 »

Hello Everyone
I’m a long time reader of this forum but never joined as I always found the answer to my queries, although, a keen home mechanic, I don’t consider myself experienced enough to advise on other people’s dilemmas. Sadly, this time I can’t find the answer and was hoping for advise.
Several weeks ago I was fitting some DRL’s, after fitting one I decided to test it. Like an idiot, after the test I forgot to turn off the ignition and remove the key before completing the job. After I’d finished, I realised my mistake and, hey ho, the key had been disabled.
I got a mobile auto guy to come and recode my key for 60 quid but he couldn’t get the RF remote to pair, so I bought a new key.
Anyway I decided to invest in a Diagbox, installed on old laptop and would use it as a stand alone diagnosis laptop. Installed and updated as per video and works well on everything but………
I enter Lexia and everything is fine except there is no option to enter programming mode for my new key. Also when I run a fault test I get the message Intermittent fault. TRANSPONDER IDENTIFIER NOT RECEIVED.
Well now I have got catch 22. I can’t reset the BSI because the RF function is not working on my key and I can’t programme a new key because the BSI won’t let me.
Any help and advise will be greatly received as I am currently on short-time, due to covid, and money is a little tight.
2003 Xsara 2.0 hdi
Win 7 32 bit Laptop

Thanks in advance

To Synchronise the Remotes on the Xsara:
  • Put the HF key to be synchronised in position "ignition +"
  • Press on the locking button (big button) on the HF key
  • Wait between 5 and 10 seconds
  • Release the locking button on the HF key
  • Switch off the ignition with the HF key
  • Wait 3 seconds
To reset the BSI follow this guide:

BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure

The Key Pairing should be located following the menus below - but may vary depending on version of Lexia:

"DIAGNOSIS"
"XSARA"
"GLOBAL TEST"
"BSI ECU"
"INITIALISATION"
"KEY INITIALISATION"

If you have replaced the Fob you will need the correct type for this vehicle - they are not all the same and you can't use any type of fob.

You'll also need your confidential customer code if you are programming the new fobs with Lexia.

2003 is on the change over to full multiplexing - does it have ridged bits on the stalks with flat ends, or smooth bits with bullet shaped ends?

My guess is that the the detection coil around the ignition lock is failing, it used to be a common fault.

2003 is almost certainly full multiplex unless it is a very late registered vehicle. Our 2001 Xsara had the earlier type of indicator/wiper stalks (which meant we couldn't easily fit cruise control - grr) and was on a Y reg. Six months later on a 51 reg they had the later indicator/wiper stalks.

Ours was 2003, on 52, and had the earlier type. Although that was a Xsara Picasso - you are right that the Mk2 Xsara car that came in 2001 was full multiplex. In which case I am not sure if the transponder reader is separate or if it's part of the COM2000?

The RF receiver is separate from the transponder aerial for the key. Early multiplexed ones the receiver is in the BSI, later ones its in the com2000. Ive never known a com2000 or BSI to fail on the RF reciever.

Thanks for the reply but I can't reset the BSI as the RF function is not working, can't enter the initialisation on Lexia as BSI is not responding. Because the RF on original key packed up I bought a new Genuine Citroen Key and fob but as I said, on Lexis I am getting the message Transponder Identifier Not Responding.

It's the newer version.
Key works fine so I shouldn't have thought it's the detection coil.

I was convinced the RF in the BSI had failed now I'm just totally confused

Im a bit confused now, Are you saying the brand new key you got starts the car but wont lock with the remote? If so how was it programmed?
I dont understand why there wouldn't be a key programming menu in the BSI, you cant be looking in the right place.
Are you saying you cant even get into the BSI menu with Lexia & even read faults etc?
Do you have your security code to allow you to program the keys?

That's what I can't work out either.... if you programmed the new fob - that would have to be done via the transponder coil in the ignition and should allow you to start the car.

@Greg: Can you please pop your VIN up so we can identify the exact system you have. That would save unnecessary answers that possibly aren't relevant to your vehicle.

Sorry, I know it sounds confusing, I'll try again.

Old key works on ignition but RF will not programme
New key ready to go with code but not yet programmed
Lexia: Scans, select BSI and I get all options with the exception of Programming. try and run a fault diagnosis on BSI and I get the message: 'intermittent fault. Transponder Identifier not Received'.

You can also try looking in the customer options section of Lexia - sometimes the key programming is in there.

If I remember right you do a global test, go into BSI then the Learning menu & key programming is in there.
Even if there was a BSI fault it should not stop the menu being there.
