Re: Lockdown Vintage Audio Activities...
I remember that well Neil, I had one on my first full size bike, well 24" wheel, which sounded great but looked odd on one side of the handlebars so Dad bought a second for the other side and I had a two tone horn, well same tone really despite me trying to "adjust" the diaphragm in one to change its tone!! All I succeeded in doing was wrecking it but at least they looked the part!!
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

That looks a poor imitation of a Bush TR - something or other.

Yep TR82 quite right Mick. We sold those in our shop - the genuine ones I mean.

It surprises me that Akai was part of anything like that, they were a well respected name way back.

It was always the one to avoid, like Pifco.

Re: Lockdown Vintage Audio Activities...
So did we and my Mum bought one which lived on the kitchen window sill from then in 1964 until she moved out and we bought the house off her in 1973 (the deposit was our wedding present!) and it was relegated to the spare bedroom!!

There are still quite a few genuine ones about, they must have sold thousands.

Re: Lockdown Vintage Audio Activities...
And a few DAB reproductions too Peter... I nearly got caught out in a second-hand shop a few months ago thinking I'd found an MB60 - the valve version of the TR82 - but it was a poor copy with DAB innards...
There were many versions of the TR82 over the years and one, the model number of which currently escapes me, had FM too. Excellent sets
My 'new' workshop wireless packed up a couple of days ago with loud hum...
An easy fix, one section of the smoothing block had failed...
It only lasted 55 years

Nice tidy radio Jim - and repairable. There was someone else making reproduction TR82's which did look very much like the original, can't remember who it was. Never seen a DAB one though.
Yes its disgusting Mick, this throw away society.

Re: Lockdown Vintage Audio Activities...
I can still get them on consumer rights Mick, goods must be fit for purpose and must last a reasonable amount of time I'd say at least 60 years...
Given the valves are all original I thought I'd best buy a spare output valve (a UCL82) as I did not have one in my extensive valve stock... It cost, for a NOS Mullard, as much as the whole radio cost when new... A little more in fact... The valve came in at £12.95 including postage and the radio cost 12 Gns.
It's a good one Peter and despite being a real budget short superhet its performance is very good. No problem to repair at all - one of the simplest sets I've ever seen with an amazingly low component count!
So low is the component count that it used a high-impedance speaker to avoid using an output transformer... In mine the speaker failed and the replacement is a standard low impedance one with a small output transformer mounted on it... It may even have been done by me and may have been the reason the set fell into my hands when both of us were much, much younger!
