06 Citroen C4 Starting Issues

Post by KanaalAap »

Hi there everyone,

I am coming to you guys in need of some desperate assistance.

I have a 06 C4 1.6 Petrol.

So this is how the story goes,
Drove about 80km on morning, no issues on the car, no shuddering nothing, about three hours later the car cranks but just does not want to start.

After numerous troubleshooting, and diagnostics, it pointed to the fuel pump.

I obviously could not find a fuel pump where I am, so decided to put a wire directly from the battery to the pump to test, car starts perfectly, reconnect everything, tested voltage at the pump, nothing.

So I wired in a toggle switch to the fuel pump directly from the battery to at least get the car running.

It starts first swing, no issues.

But now, the car seems to reset itself all the time, central locking doesnt work, wipers going on randomly, the main lock/unlock button only works when the car is idling.

After some more research it points more to the BSI and the relay on there, and it seems you can just replace the relay, its all part of the BSI unit.

Has anyone ever encountered such problems? Or have someone replace that relay? A second hand BSI unit is hell expensive and scarce here.

IF anyone has any idea what I can look for it will be much appreciated

Regards from South Africa!

The relay for the fuel pump is in the BSM not the BSI.
The BSM is the under bonnet fusebox.
The other issues you are having sound completely separate to me, were you messing about with fuses or the shunt fuse during your fault finding?

P.S. it can be dangerous to bypass a fuel pump relay, if you have an accident & the fuel line gets severed it will keep pumping fuel out

Hi, sorry meant BSM.

Only took the fuses out the check them.

The direct wire is only a temp solution to get the car driving in case I need to get it to someone.

I've seen mentioned this shunt fuse, is it in the inside fuse box?

So what you saying is the fact that the fuel pump is bypassed would not mess with the central locking and resetting freak out?

Do you know if there is a way to have the fuel pump relay repaired or do I need to replace the whole bsm unit?

Thank you

I would say its a good bet that you have either put one back in the wrong place or blown one.
The shunt fuse is inside & can be fitted in 2 different positions. It should be in the ‘client’ position.
If you are handy with a soldering iron then the relay could be replaced.

If you know the part number for the BSM (fusebox) then i would suggest you take a look at eurocarcare.net.

Hi all, feel like quite the idiot. OK the bsm is still not working to the fuel pump, but the unlocking freaking out was in fact the shunt fuse put back in the wrong position.

Except for the temp fuel pump cable I'm running again.

Thanks for all the help and advice everyone!

Have the other issues gone away, do the wipers behave and i have to admit that i cannot believe the shunt fuse in the wrong position would cause the central locking to go mental and you still have the issue with the fuel pump not being fed from the BSM.
Sorry but i just have a gut feeling that very soon it will just refuse to do anything apart from giving you multiple fault codes and doing random stuff that makes no sense.
Then you will end up replacing the BSM

Bsm replacement is definatly on the cards, at least now I can get somewhere with the car as its my only transport.

Still can't believe one fuse in the wrong place caused so many problems.

Just a pity you can't just unplug the faulty relay and replace it,
