Soot at 75% - time to clean/replace DPF?

Post by osx »

Looks like I got another 20,000 miles (will be at 180,000m by then).

If those percentage values for recent driving styles are an accurate indication of your overall driving style, then I'd say your DPF has had a fair chance over its life to regen as necessary, and so its 76% clogging isn't going to improve a great deal. Keep going until it starts giving you dire warnings about the imminent end of the world / demise of your DPF.

You can opt to have it cleaned on or off vehicle using a spray in system - even Halfords do that now. results will depend on level of blockage.

Taking them off and pressure washing them will increase the risk of damaging the internals - specifically the cement that holds everything in place.

New ones are not as costly as they were nowadays.

Citroen Original is £1062.13
Citroen Exchange is £728.57

But you can get aftermarket ones like here from Spareto from £175 Euros plus carriage.

Indeed. Mostly motorway miles so not much more that can be done to help. Don't think I'll be keeping it for another 160,000 miles so will wait for it to get around 90% and then try a deep clean!

Or £100 for one from ECP

https://www.eurocarparts.com/diesel-particulate-filter

Makes more sense to replace it for that price. Would I see any difference if I change it now? Does that amount of soot cause any performance issues?

It comes with a 3y warranty so how bad can it be?

Any reprogramming required or just a simple part replacement?

I think I'd look at it from the other direction - replace it when you start to notice a difference.

I Agree ^ monitor that reading each month and see how it changes according to the miles from now onwards to get an idea of remaining life.

As for the 3 year warranty - that will cover the replacement part but not the labour of removing and replacing and connecting all the pipes up of course. I only say use caution from these people as my own experience has been dire - with every single part I ever ordered from them damaged or faulty on arrival. Others here will also attest to their own experiences - but of course your choice.

I will probably just observe then. Service manual advises replacing at 120,000 miles so I guess it has done very well.

Yes, agreed, it does vary depending on driving conditions and journeys of course, so they have that figure as the lower part to account for those doing shorter journeys more often. It's all part of the cost of diesel ownership though. I've now got Adblue to fill up and pay for too every 6700 miles or so - which although I can achieve about 71 MPG in extremely good conditions and roads, in reality I will get nearer the high 50s to mid 60s.

The soot clogging is the amount of regenerable soot that is in there, at 75% it will shortly regen. Somewhere there should be a figure for additive in the filter, which will be given as grams (or mg). Once it gets to the prescribed mileage it will put on the risk of filter clogging warning showing that it thinks it needs replacing. If the pressures are OK and its still regenning, you can just tell it it's been replaced and it will be happy! You can clean them - I found a good vid on you tube where different cleaning fluids were tested - in the end dishwasher tabs to remove the oil and soot followed by an acid wash to dissolve the ash deposits was the best combination.

Yes, I mean the non-combustible components (Cerine elements, engine deposits and other objects) which are measured in Grammes - and this is the figure you need to watch not the soot level.

See here where I have arrowed in red:
image_2021-01-05_103131.png
On the previous C5 MK II with the DW10BTED4 engine, the amount dumped into the particle filter would be about 127 grammes for a 6 speed manual at 75,000 miles distance and 99 grammes for an automatic which are also the alert levels for each. I can't see it being much different for the X7 with the same engine.
