Door locks DS7

Post by rowsell »

Dear All,

hope someone can help?

whilst washing my DS7 with a jet wash when I jet washed around the handle on the front passenger side the doors locked, I stopped spraying think what just happened and sprayed again and the doors unlocked?

I checked my keys but I had left them in my house about 18ft away form the car.

I done this a few time and every time I got near the passenger door handle the central locking either locked or unlocked, it also happened on the drivers side?

the only way I got round this was to move my keys to the back of the house which was over 30 ft away from the car which seemed to work?

has anyone else had this problem?

regards

It's documented that using pressure washers can unlock / lock the car from the sensors in front of and behind the door handles. You should avoid high pressure washers, and keep a larger distance away from the handles if doing so.

I'd also make sure you put your key fobs in a faraday pouch too! - As it seems if the car is unlocking, then you have not protected them and your car can easily be stolen by relay theft. One thief goes up to your house and holds a receiver / transmitter to pick up and relay the signal emitted from your fob, whilst the other thief stands near your car and picks up the relayed signal then bingo your car is opened and can be started and driven off.

Mostly all manufacturers are guilty of poorly protecting your vehicle, and only now are some of them engineering motion sensors into the fobs that turn off the transmission signal after a period of non-movement, which would stop this attack from happening. Very few are retrospectively fitting these devices because of the cost.

As far as I'm aware, PSA are not doing this, but currently are providing a 'free' option where customers can contact their dealer who will deactivate the Keyless entry system.

thanks Marc,

this is the only car i have had with keyless entry that has done this to me, my others were ok.

will need to protect my car a little better than i do now. Thief's are getting very clever....

Same here Peter, my new Aicross has the same system so means having to be a bit more vigilant. The trouble is the Faraday pouches do wear out as the metallic fabric used to line the pouches wears thin as the fobs (along with any attached house keys for example) are inserted and removed. This can lull one into a false sense of security. So always a good idea to take the pouch with fob in out to the car every now and then to make sure it is still blocking the signal.

You can also get some Faraday boxes that may be a better solution - just bung the keys in there and flip the lid. You can also get the material separately in case you need to re-line the pouches or boxes.

What a performance! I'm really surprised the insurance companies have not insisted that the car makers do some retrospective upgrades seeing the amount hey are paying out on these types of thefts. Also - we are seeing a resurgence in the medieval steering wheel locks! Says it all really.

Am I the only one who thinks it would be far better for the manufacturers to accept they have overengineered the whole thing. Keep keyless entry if you must to allow the doors to be unlocked with armfulls of shopping but scrap keyless ignition and go back to needing something physical and removable to start the car. Much safer and probably no more expensive!! :)

I agree Mickthemaverick,

you buy a car that you think is secure and if you can gain access you can nearly drive away. video above does make you think....

Mine doesn't even have an ignition barrel now - and just to add that the penny pinching is still ongoing - they dropped the glovebox lighting on later C3 Aircrosses as well as the rear cup holders in the rear armrests! I mean really, how much is that going to save? Furthermore, RHD versions don't get refrigerated gloveboxes either - they only provided that for LHD.

Yes, it does have that - it's all electronic though Mick - as soon as you push the button to stop the engine it locks the steering wheel straight away. At least that's something!

Yes but presumably that means it unlocks as soon as you unlock the car and press start so it is still not really doing anything!

No it stays locked until the car authorises the start of the vehicle - but no good of course if the car has already been accessed by relay thieves - so right on that front Mick.

My VW ID.3 has movement sensors in the key fob which shut down communication with the car when just lying on the table in the house

However I still put both DS7 and ID.3 in a Faraday pouch.

Something physical to unlock and start is by far the best bet imo!! Plus of course you don't have to worry about Faraday pouches etc1 :)

Not much use when you are walking around with them in your pocket to stop others taking your keys to 'borrow' the car rather than get their car out of the garage!! :-D

Yes, that's what I was referring to by some manufacturers, notably Mercedes, BMW and Audi to name a few and of course VW being part of the one of these groups. It is a sensible thing to at least remove that vulnerability. I think you are right to keep them in pouches as a back up too - a slight puff of wind could set it off! :-D

I think PSA's response is a bit paltry to be honest "well offer to disable the system for free"... a bit cheeky considering they've build a vulnerable system in the first palce - or more to the point the actual makers of the system - probably Bosch, Continental or one of the others.... they should be made to contribute to the cost of free upgraded fobs for customers. I'm surprised the EU haven't come down on them - in the States I'm sure a few class actions would be out by now. We are too soft on large companies over here - too much mamby pamby red tape and regulation and not enough common sense - 'if its faulty we'll see you right' type of attitude.
