Berlingo Parasitic drain

Post by lavericklaverick »

Hi,
(Berlingo 2012 deseil)

My battery is going flat so I've stuck a multimeter in series, i get around 0.5A being drawn (car locked, wait 3mins).

To check what it could be i disconnected each fuse one by one to see what it could be but the current remained at 0.5A.

When the car is running I get 14.5v on the terminals so seems like the alternator is fine.

It seems like it must be a component that is doing it, not just a shorted cable since the current is pretty low.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of doing the BSI next (bit hesitant incase i screw something else up doing that).

Many thanks in advance,

Andrew

Is there any non original electrical equipment fitted, Handsfree kit, stereo, towbar wiring etc?
Did you disconnect every fuse? under bonnet & inside? remember there are also maxi fuses hidden under the under bonnet fusebox.
You should only have around 0.04 amps after the BSI powers down after around 3 minutes.

Aftermarket alarms used to be notorious for this.

0.5A is about 6W, so also check for something like a boot light not going out.
You should be able pin it down by a bit more of what you've done already - pulling every fuse.

hi everyone, thanks so much for your replies!

I did the fuses on the ecu and in the glove box, will hunt down the rest.

The only thing thats been added was a stereo (by me, just a hardness but disconnected) and there are towing lights that have now been disconnected, will check that out too.

Is there any risk to doing a bsi reset? I read it was possible that it doesnt get to put back to sleep and can keep drawing power.

Thanks again for your help.

All sorted. it was the trailer lights, removed the fuse and the drain has gone down to around 5mA.

Thanks again for everyone's help, first time fixing a problem with a car.

Happy new year!

Now find out what in the trailer lights was sucking the power. Go to it!
