Got a nasty feeling that Daffodil's pet may have stolen its coat from her synchromesh rings!! Hopefully it won't become an issue :?: :)

Happily the gearbox is as smooth as silk Mick 😃 That's likely 26 years worth of swarf... I've seen a lot worse!

“ Tomorrow I'll be doing the wheel bearings... Currently the bearing housings and circlips are soaking in Plus Gas..”

Some good work there Jim! Maybe I’ll get to see it before the end of time 🤣

What is in Plus Gas? To me, it smells and feels like diesel, which I’ve used to similar effect in the past.

I'm delighted at Daffodils overall condition, she's very clean underneath and so far, I've found nothing during my activities on her to give me any concern :D

Mike, I'll be delighted to see you as soon as the current situation allows :D A very warm welcome awaits :)

Plus Gas certainly smells like diesel but is a lot thinner, It reminds me a bit of Tractor Vaporising Oil (TVO), a high grade of paraffin (kerosene). All I know is that it does a cracking job ;)

Interesting to see the MDS for it Steve, thanks for posting that :) It's good to see they use CO2 as a propellant, as it's often used in conjunction with heat to shift awkward stuff and that reduces the fire risk a bit...

I've seen what happens if an aerosol propelled by butane is sprayed on a hot surface  The most spectacular was a butane propelled 'air duster' sprayed onto a hot laser printer fuser, the older incandescent type...

The bang and fireworks were most impressive... Remarkably, the printer survived!

The Shell spec sheet for that particular distillate is ..

So Jim is right, it’s a light paraffin.

A very nice man from Amazon brought me this today 🙂
It sucks!
It sucks!
A vacuum brake bleeding kit... I'll be trying it on Daffodil later 😉 It should make flushing out her old brake fluid and bleeding in the new a nice, clean and easy job.

I'll report back 😉

Just waiting on a delivery of brake fluid now...

If the pressure gauge goes into the red you're positive 🤣

Mick, thanks 😊 I'm going to enjoy browsing through that site 😎

But first, now I've done all my domestic stuff, including cooking a wicked curry 🍛 I'm off to do a bit more on Daffodil 🙂 Won't get much done today as time is against me. In my world it's early evening already 🙄

Over the years I've replaced countless wheel bearings, mainly in Xantias and XMs and in every case they've been a fight

Even a little Pug 106 I did put up a very credible fight!

I was amazed today at just how easy Daffodil's were to do... I got an idea they would not be difficult when I was able to extract the circlips without mangling them and attacking them with a cold chisel and big hammer
Could use that one again!
Could use that one again!
The bearings needed very little pressing out...
I have a pressing engagement!
I have a pressing engagement!
Nearly there...
Nearly there...
Normally, to get the inner race off the stub axle takes heat, angle grinders and cold chisels but not Daffodil's... Hers came off using a flat bearing puller and a pair of big tyre levers :D

And here are all the removed bits, all undamaged, ready or new bearings to be fitted... That's a job for tomorrow...
An exploded view...
An exploded view...
The old bearings had died for the usual reason...The grease had dried out...

Reassembly will commence tomorrow, weather permitting :D

I'm hoping by tomorrow afternoon Daffodil will be back in her warm, dry garage...

Then it'll be time to do the rear drums and bearings... I can do those indoors...

A very good day on Daffodil today...

After spending the night in the freezer to shrink them, the new bearings and the hubs/stub axles slid into place a treat :)
Another pressing appointment
Another pressing appointment
A shiny new bearing in place
A shiny new bearing in place
Reassembly did not take long :) Behind the shiny new disc, bearing and pad is a nice new driveshaft :)
Perfect!
Perfect!
Wheels on and Daffodil is nicely tucked up in her cosy garage again :D
Sweet Dreams!
Sweet Dreams!
The remaining jobs can now be done indoors...

I gave my new vacuum bleeding kit a try today...
The bleeder pump and waste fluid reservoir...

The business end...
The business end...
Fundamentally, it works well and is great for drawing a large volume of fluid through the system for flushing purposes.

One problem I was warned about by a person with much experience of these things is that they have a tendency to draw in air down the bleed nipple threads and this can be seen as a stream of small bubbles in the fluid flowing out of the nipple.

This does not seem to have adverse effects on braking performance but just in case I'll likely use it for an initial 'quick and dirty' bleed and a flush before doing a final bleed using more traditional methods...

It certainly does make it a very quick and clean job of it... The waste fluid catch bottle is a lot better than the jamjar used in the traditional methods... I have a terrible tendency for kicking over jamjars full of brake fluid and making a terrible mess
