Ok, so you have a DPF additive tank on your 508, not a pouch system.
So the engine ECU estimates the additive remaining (it's not measured physically) and works out the distance remaining in miles before your next service is due (from the programmed service schedule) where, depending on service schedule and mileage covered, the additive would be checked. If the engine ECU thinks you will run out of additive before your service interval, it will flag up a low additive warning and a message.
When the additive is later topped up - it is essential the engine ECU is told the additive has been refilled, so it is aware and can make the correct ongoing calculations.
A Service Light can be indicative of other faults - and in the case of your car I think I mentioned what that fault code involved on a similar vehicle. But this particular fault may be better dealt with by a Peugeot dealer as they will more likely be aware of the specifics and can also check regarding whether a software update ins required too.

Thanks to everyone for the very informative feedback on the subject and as advised I ended up taking the car to a main dealer who cleared the codes for £48.
Can my own mechanic have his Snapon system updated to cope with this type of problem in the future?

Glad you sorted it.
That will be down to your mechanic and how often he updates his software if / when there are updates and whether he has to pay to update it. With car parts, system hardware and software changing daily across the PSA range, modifications are made / issues discovered and ECUs need updating, that's why Citroen charge more as they have the up to date proprietary systems that are always up to date via PSA servers.
You may find some garages don't bother to update their systems often enough, especially if there are charges to keep up with the manufacturers and that is likely why they will run into issues with this sort of thing.

I'm told by my neighbours grandson who has the Snap-on tool that the updates are painfully expensive.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.
