catalytic converter

Post by moomoo »

Hello all,
Ive noticed something else today about my van and it's engine..
I didn't spot it when I bought it...but then again I wasn't looking for it.
There's no catalytic converter on my exhaust....it looks as though where it was fitted theres a welded piece of 'braided' exhaust ..about 18 inches long.
I've acquired a new motor and box for it today and looking at the replacement engine and box I noticed the converter on the newer vehicle.
Question is ...and it may be obvious but..are all 1.9TDs fitted with the converter....or is it just coincidence that the exhaust on my van has been bodged in the very spot where the CC is located on the donor van?
I'm sure i've heard it's an MOT failure if it's supposed to have one.

Thanks
Moo

Some XUD9TE PSA engines did have a catalytic converter and some early ones didn't - probably on the cusp of the Euro regs changing which is why there were some with and some without.

Hi Marc,
I found this ...I don't know if it's been posted...
Legal Status: If your vehicle is registered before 1st March 2001, then you DO NOT need to fit a Type Approved Catalytic Converter. However, if your vehicle is registered after 1st March 2001, then YOU MUST fit a Type Approved Catalytic Converter in accordance with UK Legislation Laws.
Catalytic Converters & Type Approval
What is a Catalytic Converter or Cat?

The Catalytic Converter (commonly known as a Cat) is a device that helps to reduce the harmful emissions from your vehicle's engine.

How does it work?

The Cat works by filtering the exhaust gases through an internal honeycomb section known as a Monolith. The Monolith is either ceramic or metal and is coated with precious metals such as Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium. Using a combination of heat and precious metals the Catalytic Converter promotes a chemical reaction that reduces the harmful emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides and converts them into water vapour and less harmful gases.

Do I Need a Type Approved Cat?

If your car is X registration or older and therefore first registered before 1st March 2001 you DO NOT need to buy a Type Approved catalytic converter.

If your car is Y registration or newer and therefore first registered on or after 1st March 2001 YOU MUST buy a Type Approved catalytic converter.

A Type Approved catalytic converter has a higher loading, contains more precious metals and is therefore equivalent to the original unit.

The R103 Type Approval regulations are enforceable by law and non compliance can lead to a £5000 fine.
Looks like I'll be able to fit a non-type approved CC....or maybe not one at all?
The one on the donor van will be a type approved...and like the owner of that van says....he'd want as much for the CC as he does for the engine and box.

So your V5 logbook should have all the info in - including the Type Approval overall for the vehicle under part 'K'. That should give you the basis for what is required.

Thanks again Marc...
Just looked on the v5....the Type Approval number is blank.
I'll just get a new non-catalytic front pipe...the rest doesn't look bad.
